When customizing a shortcut with a different icon, Windows XP usually
defaults to the SHELL32.dll, providing a choice of about 250 icons.
Among these, is the red "Turn Off" icon. Missing from this list,
however, are the other two "Turn off computer" icons: Stand By and
Restart (shown with you select, Start, Turn Off Computer).

I would really like to use these two other icons, but I cannot find
them within any .dll, .exe, or .ico files on my system.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Good Day aaronpb-ga,

I was unable to find the icons right in the Operating System, but I
did extract them using my Paint Software, and an Icon editor. Please
let me know if these meet your needs and standards.

I sincerely appreciate the effort you put into creating the icons, but
maybe I should have written my question better. Surely those icons
are located in a .dll or .exe file somewhere. I’m really wanting to
establish whether or not they are already available.

Regarding the icons you created, they match the existing style of the
"Turn Off" icon (currently found in SHELL32.dll) with one exception:
They are missing the white, rounded border. Are you willing to modify
them?

Hi aaronpb-ga,

Sorry for the lack of the border. Yes, I can add it in without too
much trouble. Is that something that will be acceptable, or would you
still rather get the icons out of XP directly? They must be available
somewhere, since the OS uses them, but I haven't been able to find
where. It seemed like a better way to go would be to extract them from
a screen capture.

Please let me know if adding the border is sufficient, or if I should
look for the XP included version instead.

Hi aaronpb-ga,

Made some discoveries with the help of a program called Icon Catcher.

Restart button is in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\windowsxp.icl
(when browsing for the file you must change file types to ALL from
Icon Files in order to see it, or you can just copy and paste the
path)

Still searching for the Stand By button...

Hi aaronpb-ga,

I was unable to find the stand by icon, so I added a border to the one
I created. Please let me know if this acceptable.

slawek-ga,

Thank you for all of your efforts. The Restart icon found residing in
windowsxp.icl is not a very good quality icon--and it does not match
the size of the built-in Turn Off icon.

The icons you created from screen caps are awesome, but lack the
border. I downloaded the standby.zip and extracted the new icon, but
it still appears to have no border. To see what I'm talking about,
look at my screen shot at http://www.cpulab.com/google/icons.bmp.

Can you make the Standby and Restart icons you grabbed from the screen
cap look exactly like the Turn Off icon as pictured in my screen cap?

Sincerely,
aaronpb-ga

Hi aaronpb-ga,

Sorry for the delay in my response. I must have zipped the wrong icon.
I will send the two icons sometime later today, and I will ensure that
they have the border. :) Thanks for your patience.

Good Day aaronpb-ga,

All three icons with a sample screen shot can be downloaded from
http://www.bytechcanada.net/~slawek/icons.zip

The sample screen shot is of part of my desktop with the three icons
in use, and is in JPG format.

Please let me know if everything works for you.
Enjoy! :)

What can I say? You are awesome! The icons are absolutely perfect
and I am very grateful for the amount of time you invested in this
endeavor. Thank you for all your help.

I have experienced the same problem. I wanted to use the restart icon
for a one-click restart button on the quick launch bar, but I couldn't
find the icon. I downloaded Icon Catcher, but I still cannot find it.
I looked for the file windowsxp.icl, but I found that it doesn't exist
on my computer. Those links for the edited icons are inactive by now,
so I guess I'll have to go elsewhere to solve this problem.

I also noticed recently that icons.zip was no longer available.
Fortunately, I retained the original file and have posted it on my
website. You can download the file at
http://www.cpulab.com/google/icons.zip. Hope this helps!
