Hmmm...I found archived pages from various dates in 2001, for
somnabulate.com, and they include an swf file on one page, and another
that looks something like your description (black background, etc),
but they're not one and the same.

------------

A page from late September 2001 starts out with this text:

www.somnambulate.com
Other Entries
poetry

Friday, September 28, 2001

well things are going ok - actually great - lunch was really nice -
and I had a good time - feeling tired now - but looking forward to the
night ending - looking forward to a quiet weekend...........

Enya PAX DEORUM song of the now......

[and so on....]

---

The "Poetry" link is an intro.swf file, but it leads (now) to an
almost blank page with a search box on it (a bit reminiscent of
Google, actually)...I don't think this is where the link went
originally (back in 2001).

-----------

Another somnabulate.com archive page contains diary type entries from
Nov 13, 2001 - Nov 28, 2001 that look a bit like your description, but
do not contain an swf file/link as far as I can see.

Some of the text on the page looks like this:

:: sleepwalk with me ::
through the broken corridors of my sanity
:: welcome to sleepwalk with me ::

HOME | EMAIL ::
[ARCHIVE]

[LYNX]
work
somnambulate
bored?
sick?
[FAVORITES]
poet
- sara teasdale
playwright
william shakespeare

-----

and includes daily log entries like this:

 :: Wednesday, November 28, 2001 ::

song of the now : london : paul van dyke

cold winds blow me away : far away : across the ocean : to an older
city : everyone is dressed in black again : the biting burn of ice
collecting on my ears : rummaging through my heart : i'm alone -
walking briskly down the street - not too tall buildings - and smaller
cars : shoes passing through puddles : red faced flush women :
sheltered from the cold - sip apple cider : and i smile at the falling
ice - wondering when the weather gonna just blow me away :

---------------------------

Does any of this look like what you are after? If not, I'm afraid
whatever swf material might once have existed has since disappeared.

Let me know what you think.

do you have a swf file -

it may be the intro.swf - i am not completely sure - but i do know
that there was some poetry on the page - and a list of names on a page
also - along with a string of words with "godot?" every so often -
i'll try to dig more up if you need it - i don't have access to it
right now

Hmmm....again.

I *think* the page I found is what you're looking for. For instance,
it has a list of "Favorites" that includes Waiting for Godot as a
favorite play, among others:

[ARCHIVE]

[LYNX]
work
somnambulate
bored?
sick?

[FAVORITES]
poet
- sara teasdale

playwright
william shakespeare

novelist
- george orwell

movie
- the king of masks

play
- waiting for godot (beckett)

book
- a brave new world (huxley)

short story
- the lady or the tiger? (stockton)

poem
- love's secret (blake)

painter
- patrick nagel

painting
- space eve 1972 (dali)

These are all listed on a jet black page, in very small typeface
(maybe 6 point) that is mostly yellow, but also pale blue, and orange
in places.

Problem is, though, it isn't an swf file, nor does this particular
page even contain a link to an swf.

Do you want me to post the link as an answer, on the chance (with
pretty good odds, I think) that this is what you're looking for?

If not, any additional information you can provide about page
layout...content...links...anything that will help me confirm whether
this is the page or not...will be very helpful.

if it isn't a swf file it isn't what i am looking for - do you see any
swf files at all near the end of october or the begining of november -

it had three pages with a next button to the next page - and so on

i know the page you found is not the file i need - i appreciate your
efforts but it is definitely a swf file

the list of 26 or 27 names will let you know - they are numbered and
on the right side - i believe it is the third page of the swf file -

they read as follows
1. meredith bullard
2. heather allen
3....and so on

i hope this helps

Sadly, this file does not exist even on the Way Back Machine internet
archive. While you can find a link to the page (noted at the end of
this comment) and you can click on the word poetry it begins to try to
load the swf file, but the redirects to eBay. I checked the source
code in this to see what was happening and found this:
"<!-- SOME SCRIPT SRC'S ON THIS PAGE HAVE BEEN REWRITTEN BY THE
WAYBACK MACHINE
OF THE INTERNET ARCHIVE IN ORDER TO PRESERVE THE TEMPORAL INTEGRITY OF
THE SESSION. -->

<SCRIPT language="Javascript">
<!--

// FILE ARCHIVED ON 20030914111325 AND RETRIEVED FROM THE
// INTERNET ARCHIVE ON 20030914111328.
// JAVASCRIPT APPENDED BY WAYBACK MACHINE, COPYRIGHT INTERNET ARCHIVE.
// ALL OTHER CONTENT MAY ALSO BE PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT (17 U.S.C.
// SECTION 108(a)(3))."

I'm sorry - but I believe you would need to get in touch with the
owners of the web site (those who owned it at the time it contained
the swf) and see about getting a copy from them. There is no archive
on line available to the public. Do be careful about copyright
infringement.
