Question ID: 255406
I have a problem with Internet Explorer on Windows XP not remembering
the password to websites on my server.

The server is running Windows 2000 Server/IIS 5 with "Integrated
Windows authentication". It is NOT a domain controler, and only
handles WEB functions. DNS and EMAIL are done by seperate servers.
It is not a "Domain Controler".

Internet Explorer on Windows 2000 does remember the password, but on
XP it doesn't. XP will let you access the site if you type in the
password, and even gives you the option to save the password, but
saving the password never works. These same XP computers are able to
save similar passwords for other websites.

What do I need to do to make Internet Explorer on Windows XP remember
the password?

Hi qcc-ga,

Is this an intranet site or internet site? (ie: Which zone does IE
display in the bottom right corner?) If it's an intranet site, do you
access it via http://nameofserver/ or
http://nameofserver.company.com/? Thanks.

It is an internet site. IE displays "Internet" in the bottom right
corner. It is a secure site, I access it at:

https://nameofserver.comany.com/

Hey qcc-ga,

One thing I've noticed with IIS and IE/NT Challenge authentication is
that it tries to match the hostname of the website with the hostname
of the server. Next time you get the password prompt on Windows XP,
note the popup password dialog. It should say something like
"Connecting to xyz.com". If that doesn't match the website name
directly, IE seems to refuse to pull up the password for it.

One workaround that I normally use is that I add the site I need into
my Trusted Sites list (IE, Tools, Options, Security). Trusted Sites
must have a security level of Low or a Custom level where the last
item in the custom level list "User Authentication" is set to
"Automatically logon using current username and password".

I'm not entirely sure why it works without problems in Windows 2000
but it could be because IE on Windows 2000 is a different version (5.5
vs 6) and may have different settings for various security levels or
they just behave in different ways for User Authentication in general.

The address shown for "Connecting to www.mydomain.com" is the correct
address.

I tried putting the site in the trusted sites zone, and that
workaround does take care of the problem.

I'm glad the workaround worked. If it says "Connecting to
www.mydomain.com" and you're going to www.mydomain.com (with the www.
part), then it should have saved your password...or supposed to, at
least. Oh well, maybe I'm missing something.
