Question ID: 255461
I am launching a company that manufacturers CD and DVD storage
products. We are attempting to forecast the sales for our product.
We would like competitive information on annual sales volumes of
consumer products. Could you please provide me sales data for various
related consumer products. I am interested in annual sales worldwide
and US as well as per store average. For example, skipdoctor.com
sells a device for repairing CDs and DVDs. They are sold in 30,000
retail outlets. How many sell annually? A few other products are the
3M CD Shades, the mypageup.com paperholder and the discdealer.com CD
holder. Our product is a conglomerate of these last three. If data
is not available on these products, please provide data on similar
products. If available, retail and wholesale pricing would also be
helpful.

I am willing to accept sales volume information on consumer products
beyond the CD and DVD storage category. They do need to be products
in the $4-50 price range and ones sold in the Big Box stores like
Kmart, Circuit City etc.

<The SkipDoctor.
The SkipDoctor is currently selling at the rate of approximately 1
million units per year. This has been deduced from information from a
number of sources detailed below.

The SkipDoctor was launched in late 1999. According to a press release
dated 26 October 2001, by then the SkipDoctor was available in 14,000
outlets and had sold over 1 million units. On average half a million
units were sold each year for the years 1999 to 2000 and 2000 to 2001.
This works out at an average of 35 units per outlet.

By July 9, 2002, the SkipDoctor was sold in over 18,000 retail
locations and had sold almost 2 million units. In 9 months it had sold
just under a million units. This means that sales had increased to one
million per year. An average of 55 units sold per outlet. In 2002 a
more expensive pro version was added to the product line.

By January 9, 2003 over 2 million units had been sold.

The SkipDoctor first appeared in late 1999 and has since sold 2.8
million units. http://www.digitalinnovations.com/aboutus.asp

The current information is that the SkipDoctor has sold 3 million
units worldwide. This is consistent with sales of 1 million units per
year. It is now available in 30,000 outlets. This works out at an
average of 33 units per outlet.

The SkipDoctor product clearly has greater sales potential. A survey
carried out by the company found that 6 out of 10 people did not know
that scratched CDs could be repaired.

Thank you for the detailed answer. Your approach was excellent. I
would have liked to have received information on products closer to
mine, but this was most helpful. I have been traveling and apologize
for the late response.
