Question ID: 255603
I have a PC with Windows '98 OS and am fairly successful in using
several sizebla programs (like Photoshop Elements, Statistica, etc.)
Recently got a manuscript to read via e-mail, in "zip" format. While I
found zip.exe and unzip.exe programs in my C:\CPQS\TOOLS, I was not
able to activate the second one and eventually unzip the mail. Is
there some special sequence of steps to follow for this operatiion?
Guidance will be appreciated.

Howdy vrtak,

Rather that getting into a possibly lengthy diagnostic
session to try to get your current unzip program, which
is probably one that needs flags and such to work, you
should just download a free, and more up-to-date unzip
program. You will be glad you did.

I am going to suggest you try ExtractNow, by Nathan
Moinvaziri. It is a small download (just over 1 MB),
will do more than just .zip files (such as .rar and
.jar files), is "drag 'n' drop" (just drag the .zip
file into the ExtractNow window) so it is easy to use,
and it's free!

The ExtractNow web page, with screenshots, etc. is at
at Nathan Moinvaziri's website.
http://nmoin.brinkster.net/en/

You can download it at:
http://nmoin.brinkster.net/en/extractnow.exe

Here is some commentary from the "Lockergnome" website.
http://www.lockergnome.com/issues/daily/20011115.html

"Someone has been telling me that you need to extract
some archives. Maybe even more than one archive? Yeah,
you could use WinZip - or you could try this excellent
alternative and do several archives all at once."

If you need any clarification, feel free to ask.

Search Strategy:

Searched the CNET download.com website for free unzip
programs, downloaded the above and tested it.

Looking Forward, denco-ga

Hello,

The ExtractNow program is probably pretty decent.
But the standard for zipping and unzipping files
is still Winzip. Here's a link to where you can
download a demo version for free for a limited
time: http://winzip.com/ddchomea.htm. There's
also a beta release of the newest version that
is totally free, unlimited duration:
http://winzip.com/betawz.cgi.

Good luck!

Hmmm, $29 or something free?

Beta or a fully tested software?

I like free and fully tested.

Everyone seems to use winzip without ever registering.
If that's not like you, use gnuzip (www.gzip.org).
