How can I attatch a sound file to a Google Question? I want to see if
anyone can identify a song, but the lyrics alone have not turned up
anything on my previous attmept.

Since no attachments are possible here, you cannot attach a sound file
to a question, but you can post a link to such a file if the file
exists somewhere on the Web.

How large is the file? A Researcher may be able to suggest a place
where you could upload the file.

At this time I have a recording on a cassette tape of perhaps 2
minutes duration. My guess is that I would need to convert it to an
MP3 by importing it through my soundcard and creating a file somehow
that could be put somewhere so that a link could be created allowing
others to access it. Sort of like file sharing through KAZA ? I
would need rather specific step by step instructions and equipment
list since I have not done this before. I am open to increasing the
payment (tip) for good results.

What company is your Internet service provider? Does your account
include Web space? Most do.

My Internet provider is Comcast.net (broadband cable). I don't know
about available space but I think I can have a home page and other
e-mail addresses.

dektol-ga ,

You need to upload the sound file to a website so Researhcers can hear
it via the web. So let's focus on how you can do that:

The hardest part is setting up the gear to allow the input of sound
into your PC. After it's all set up and configured it's easy. You're
starting with a casette. Have you tried connecting your cassette
player directly to your PC's soundcard? If so, what happened? If not,
why can't you--wrong cable type, cassette player too old? Maybe you
can get an adpater if that's the problem.

Alternatively, do you have some kind of non-PC CD burner (like a
stand-alone burner, or a stereo or digital recorder with a CD-RW drive
in it? If so, then you could just connect the cassette player to that,
burn it to CD from the non-PC device, and then take the CD to the PC
for the file conversion to .mp3 which is ready for uploading.

Let me know precisely what equipment you have, including sound card
info, (or have acccess to) and I'll see if I can walk you through the
process. Otherwise, I can at least tell you what you need to get (or
borrow or rent) to do the job.

Thanks to all who have responded so far! I may actually get this to
work with this kind of help from you. My sound card is the Audigy by
Creative with a break-out box and although I do not have a stand alone
CD recorder, I have them in my computers. I also have a mini-disk
recorder but that may not be any better than the cassette since it
remains outside the box so to speak. It may be fine to just record
from a mike into my soundcard because the quality of the original
cassette was taken from radio broadcast and is no peach. Give me a
few days to mess around and I will report back. If anything else
comes to mind, feel free to comment. Thanks,

JK

dektol...

It seems you have a rather generous allotment of space in
association with your account:

"The Personal Web Page feature allows any Comcast High-Speed
Internet Service member to create and publish a 25MB Web page
per cable modem account, accessible via the Internet."
http://online.comcast.net/help/faq-detail.asp?intFaqID=320&intSubCategoryID=168

That's plenty of room for mp3 files, which are usually about
4.5 MB per song.

Hi Desktol,

While it is possible to connect your cassette player directly to your
computer IF your computer has a "line in" or "aux in" connection, the
sound quality obtained from that method is likely to be quite poor
unless you have an unusually high quality sound card. The addition of
an "in-between" sound device can make a big difference. Whether or
not you choose to use one, here's a link to a very detailed (but easy
to follow) tutorial on how to input sound from various sources into
your computer: http://www.zisman.ca/Recording/ for either burning to
CD or uploading to a website. Good luck, and let us know when you have
the sound available for us to listen to so we can try to identify it
for you.

Most PCs I am familiar with come with a built-in sound-recorder. Plug
in the mike and record the music playing from the cassette. Its a wav
file I think when this is done (I recorded my niece by this method and
think the output file was a wav). You could then upload that. Given a
lot of space it shouldn't matter how large it is, and given that many
people now have broadband connections it shouldn't really matter for
playback
