Greetings Forbzie:

The only university sniping I could locate for a college was the one
by Charles Whitman that took place on July 31, 1966. He killed 17
people and wounded 30+ shooting from the University of Texas clock
tower. See http://massmurder.zyns.com/charles_whitman.htm for more
information.

When I searched [ "Rick Dolan" sniper ] (without brackets) I located a
lesson plan that appears to be created by a teacher. It is located at
http://homepage.mac.com/deankraft/psychology/assignments/c2/ctc2.html
and reads in part:

"On April 1, 1988, Rick Dolan took a sniper rifle, and climbed to the
top of a clock tower on the campus of a major university in the United
States. Slowly, over the next four hours, he killed and wounded many
students before a SWAT team stormed the tower and Dolan himself was
killed.
Dolan killed 14, wounded 11
He had a protruding forehead.
His favorite movies starred Jean Claude Van Damme.
His favorite magazine was Guns and Ammo."

The instructions there read "Build an argument based on the following
information." It appears to me that these Dolan facts were created
for a class assignment in critical thinking. It also states there
"With the information given, and the information you purchase, you are
to build an argument as to why you think Dolan committed these
murders." If this is so, then it also appears that facts from the
Whitman case were borrowed to construct this "alleged" sniper's
personality.

In the real case, it was discovered that Whitman had a brain tumor.
Another link to the Whitman case begins at
http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial/whitman/ - Look to the left center
for chapter headings and, as you read, you'll see there that his
father beat him, beat his mother, gave Charlie and his brothers guns
for gifts, etc. He was raised in a violent household. Charlie became
a "good Marine" got in trouble during his stint in the service, then
got married. When he decided to kill from the tower, he first killed
his mother, then his wife, packed his gear, went to the tower and
began killing from there.

The assignment you have would be to takes the facts you were given
about "Dolan" and perhaps make a case for why he may have acted the
way he did given the facts. Example: "Dolan's favorite magazine was
Guns and Ammo so he was familiar with and seemingly fascinated by a
diverse array of weapons. His favorite movie star was Claude Van
Damme and he may have believed himself to be invincable or justified
in killing. His protruding forehead could indicate he had a possible
brain tumor. He may have chosen blonde women to murder because he had
been formerly slighted by his girlfriend, a blonde." This is just an
example of how you could use critical thinking to explain "Dolan's"
actions.

Should you require clarification of any of the links or information I
have provided, please request it before closing and rating this
question and I'll be happy to assist you further.

Best regards,

I could find no reference to this event on a comprehensive news
database. Perhaps it is only a test for critical thinking.

Your instructor may think it's a real story or he/she may be telling
that to the class to get them thinking. In either case, thank you for
your rating and comments! This seems to be a great exercise for
critical thinking.

Best regards,
