Hello coronaborealis, I was alerted by considerate fellow Researchers to your comment, and so I will post my finding as the answer. Florida Gulf Coast University is at least in a tie (and perhaps alone) for newest women's intercollegiate basketball team to have actually played, having debuted in the 2002-03 season: "FGCU: Women give school its first basketball win", by Will Graves (November 23, 2002) Naples Daily News http://www.naplesnews.com/02/11/sports/d864421a.htm As I noted, it is conceivable that other teams started in 2002, or will start in 2003. I happened to find this university by searching for "newest university" -- it was opened in 1997 and accredited in 1999, so it was the newest university a few years ago -- and then browsing the university's web site to see when its women's basketball team started to play. - justaskscott |

I don't know whether it's the newest (there could be new teams for 2003-04), but Florida Gulf Coast University is at least in a tie (and perhaps alone) for newest to have actually played, having debuted in the 2002-03 season: "FGCU: Women give school its first basketball win", by Will Graves (November 23, 2002) Naples Daily News http://www.naplesnews.com/02/11/sports/d864421a.htm Perhaps someone else will find a more recent, or another, new team. If not, I would be happy to post this as the answer. |
