What is up with dmoz? Everywhere I read that dmoz is down. It is not
accepting new site submits, error messages are received instead The
site is sluggish, etc. etc. I have sent dmoz emails that have not been
returned. Forums bash dmoz as unimportant and bias. Yet Google says it
is important. I have been trying to get a site listed there for over 5
months to no avail. Does anyone have THE REAL answer to the question;
What is wrong with dmoz?

Dear roseyman,

Are you looking for a semi-official source of information, from an
inside perspective, about the mechanisms of dmoz.org, technical
issues, and the status of site submissions?

Yes, semi-official, official, I am open for any qualified or even
semi-qualified response. The site seems to be inoperable, as far as
adding new sites. Is there any explanation from dmoz or any other
source that can clarify the situation? Is it still extremely important
to register with dmoz to the effect of standings within Google? Does
anyone know why dmoz isn't working? Heck, it's only $2 so I am
interested in information. Does that help?

Thanks,

DR

Two things happened recently

new servers were being brought up
AOL (which got ODP with Nestscape)dropped ODP
meaning made it into an independent org

both could have caused some temporary hickups
but I see or experience no long term problems.

You can get more info at ODP weblog

http://dmoz.theblob.org/dmoz/journal.cgi/1058380330.html?template=neil

e.g.
A few people have been reporting problems when trying to suggest a
site for inclusion in the directory over the past few days. Technical
staff are aware of the problem and efforts are being put in to fixing
it. In the meantime this thread at Resource Zone (the ODP's public
forum) offers various things to try if you are having trouble.

I meant to say

Find info at
http://dmoz.theblob.org

I should have stop there.

It actually says at

DMOZ will continue (under AOL) being the DMOZ that you know and love...

http://dmoz.theblob.org/dmoz/journal.cgi/1058380330.html?template=neil

If you click around the blog (left low corner e.g.) you find other info,
on submission problems etc,
it looks like, mentined there, is down temporarily

Thanks to expertlaw-ga for pointing out my oversight

I guess. Everyone in these forums says it isn't working, but should be
fixed, but it still doesn't work for me. It looks as though this AOL
thing is doing more than anyone wants to let on.
Thanks for the investigation, I appreciate it.

Dear roseyman,

At Resource Zone, they have a forum called "Site Submission Status",
http://www.resource-zone.com/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=status

If you inquire about your site at that location, specifically
identifying the URL and the category to which you submitted, an editor
may be able to tell you the status of your submission.
