Hello, markyboy:

You have several methods to protect your data, you can use the default
encryption system of Windows XP, but you need to have your partition
formated with NTFS, not with FAT.

Take a look at these articles to know how to do it, it's really easy:

Free file encryption with the Windows XP Encrypted File System (EFS)
http://www.iopus.com/guides/efs.htm

Encrypt Your Data to Keep It Safe
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/security/encryptdata.asp

But if you want "password" protection, you should consider some of
this software:

ComputerSafe™ security software

SecureFiles
http://www.securefiles.net/

CryptoMite
http://www.baxbex.com/cryptomite.html

IconLockit

I hope this is the information you were looking for, in any case,
please, don't hesitate to request for any clarification.

Hello, markyboy:
You can try some of this, but I suggest you to buy a product if you
are going to protect sensitive data:

FileBuddy
http://www.jcmatt.com/filebuddy.html

CryptoLock
http://www.rtsoftware.org/files.php?func=fileinfo&id=3

PowerCrypt
http://www.ovsoft.com/powercry_eng.htm

Also, if you want to password protect some file for free, you can
compress it using any ZIP utility and setup a password (8 chars
minimum, including numbers and letters) to prevent any bruteforce
attack.

I hope this helps! ;-)

Regards.

If you want to consider more than password protection, you may want to consider
