Can you tell me who said this or is it an unknown quote?

Dear webweaverlady-ga,
This one may be lost in the mists of time. I've tried a number of
Quotation databases without success. The earliest mention of it I can
find is in 1990 in a film review. Another researcher may be more
succesful.
Later on if you wish, I can provide in an answer the details of the
article and the paragraph containing the phrase.

I remember hearing this adage while I was growing up in the 1950s. I
doubt that it has an identifiable creator. It's just one of those
clichés that gets passed along.

try and find out who said it.....I can just put unknown thats fine
