What specifically is your question?

Request for Question Clarification by tutuzdad-ga on 18 Sep 2003 16:19 PDT
Are you literally hoping to find the physical hard-copy birth
certificates for these people dating from the late 1700's - early
1800's, or are you actually looking for more genealogical and other
assorted records for them?

I'd think the actual "papers" from this era (in the unlikley event
they even exist) would be MOST challenging to locate and even then you
might not be granted physical acess to them.

Actually I am trying to find out exactly what Miles Tenpen Gibbs' name
is and who his parents were? He was my Great Grandfather, his son,
Josiah Dodds Gibbs was my grandfather. Josiah Dodds Gibbs' son was my
father and I am trying to find out what the actual name of my father
is. I think it is Josiah Terpin Gibbs but it may be something else.

I believe I have uncovered the name discrepancies (on both males) that
have precluded you from finding more information about your relatives
but of course this cannot be confirmed since we are at the mercy of
research conducted by others. If you would accept this research as an
answer I'd be happy to post it for you.

Also, if Miles was born in 1823 he could not have married Meek/Meeks
in 1820. I believe I have found a record dated in the 1840's which
indciates their marriage. Again, this is someone else's research but
in any event you could contact them and perhaps compare data. Let me
know if this is acceptable as an answer.

Yes I will accept this as an answer if you have found the correct
names and also if you will get me in contact with the researcher who
found these names.

thank you.

Dear kitty2003-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.

First let me say this, as I mentioned earlier what I have discovered
is merely previous research conducted by others over the years and the
greatest expectation here is to put you in touch with the researchers
so you can compare data and make further inquiries. Since you are
agreeable to this in lieu of actual proof, I am posting this as an
answer at your request. I am confident that it will, at best, lead you
closer to the answers you are seeking; at a minimum I am absolutely
certain that you are about to meet a number of distant relatives you
didn't know you had.

Let's begin with the errors that lead to the confusion over "who's
who" in the Outlaw and Gibbs family:

------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONFUSING ERROR #1 - MILES GIBBS

Now, while researching the person you referred to as "MILES TENPEN
GIBBS" I found this important piece of data, which leads me to believe
that your problems in finding more information stems primarily from a
confusion in the spelling of your ancestor's middle name:

Here you can clearly see that he is listed as MILES TEN PIN GIBBS (not
“TENPEN”) born 29 Apr 1823 and died 23 Feb 1901.

GENCIRCLES - MILES TEN PIN GIBBS
http://www.gencircles.com/users/limulus29/1/data/13972.html

------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONFUSING ERROR #2 - ELIZABETH MEEK/MEEKS

He was in fact married to ELIZABETH JANE MEEK (not “MEEKS”) born
around 1821 and died 26 Aug 1878.

GENCIRCLES – ELIZABETH JANE MEEK
http://www.gencircles.com/users/limulus29/1/data/13973

You may contact the submitter of this data here and inquire about the
proof surrounding the spelling of these people’s names:

GENCIRCLES - SUBMITTER INFO
http://www.gencircles.com/users/limulus29

------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONFUSING ERROR #3 - JOSIAH DODD(S)

Another important piece of information comes in this research. Here
you can clearly see that this is the same MILES GIBBS listed in the
data above. We can verify this because of the name of his wife
ELIZABETH MEEK and the presence of one of the children from the
formerly referred to data, THOMAS B GIBBS.

GENCIRICLES – MILES T GIBBS
http://www.gencircles.com/users/woodser/1/data/2621.html

Note here that your grandfather is also listed among the children as
JOSIAH DODD GIBBS (not “DODDS”).

GENCIRCLES – JOSIAH DODD GIBBS
http://www.gencircles.com/users/woodser/1/data/2631

You can contact the researcher and compiler of this data by clicking
here. He apparently has quite a bit of information on this line and
may in fact be a distant relation of yours:

GENCIRCLES – SUBMITTER CONTACT INFO
http://www.gencircles.com/users/woodser/1

------------------------------------------------------------------------

You appear to be with company in your beliefs regarding some of the
name spellings. I don’t know how much you will learn, but this
researcher also appears to be working the same family line, however I
believe her data is rife with errors. Together you might be able to
ferret out the truth so it might not hurt to consult with her.

ROOTSWEB - ELLIOTT/RAMSBARGER FAMILY TREE
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=raerh&id=I00852

Her research footnotes a seemingly credible source that may in fact
lead you to others along the PERKINS side of your family as well:

“Title: Dorothy N. Perkins Book, The Descendants of Samuel, James, and
Martha (Patty) Perkins, 2000”

------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONFUSING ERROR #4 - ELIZABETH JANE MEEK WAS ALTERNATIVELY AND
APPARENTLY ERRONEOUSLY RECORDED AS "JANE MEEKS" ON SOME EARLY RECORDS

Now, as the conflicting marriage dates, I consult the LATTER DAY
SAINTS FAMILY SEARCH DATABASE and confirmed what I suspected. Because
of the information I obtained on Elizabeth Jane Meek (see above) I
knew there was no way possible for Mile and Elizabeth to have married
on the date you mentioned. Sure enough, I found it here and Elizabeth
is listed simply as JANE MEEKS (probably the source of confusion over
the years regarding her maiden name). She and Miles were married 21
DEC 1841 in Lincoln (possibly Lincoln County), Tennessee. This would
have made Miles 18 years old at the time and Elizabeth about 20 at the
time of their marriage.

We know from this 1880 District 12, Hardin, Tennessee census record
that the 1878 date of death listed for Elizabeth is probably correct
since Miles is now 56 years old and married to NANCEY A. GIBBS. It can
also be confirmed that this is the same MILES GIBBS because of the
appearance in the record of his 18-year-old daughter, LUCY A. GIBBS,
who is still living in the family home:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1880US_13241450&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=99

------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONFUSING ERROR #5 - "LAURA ISABEL (nee,OUTLAW) GIBBS" TURNS OUT TO BE
"LAURA B GIBBS" (OR IN SPECULATION PERHAPS "LAURAL BELLE GIBBS")

As for your grandfather, he first appears in this 1880 District 12,
Hardin, Tennessee census living with his parent JOSIAH D GIBBS and
LAURA B. GIBBS. I strongly believe that this is LAURA ISABEL OUTLAW
(from your previous question) listed here perhaps (speculation, but
logical) Laura Belle Gibbs. This shortening of names was a common
occurrence on 19th century census records because when asked what
their names were by the census takers many people reported the names
that they were known by rather than names they were actually born
with. If this is the case (and as I said I strongly believe it is)
this would open a whole new world in your quest for data on LAURA
OUTLAW GIBBS. You should now comfortably focus on records listing her
has “LAURA B” or “LAURA BELLE” as opposed to “LAURA I.” or “LAURA
ISABEL”. Be sure to mention this as well when you speak to
“grannyjean” about her database.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONFUSING ERROR #6 - WHAT WAS JOSIAH T GIBBS MIDDLE NAME (REMAINS
UNSOLVED, BUT AN EXCELLENT THEORY)

As for the middle name of JOSIAH T. GIBBS it appears that since we
have established his grandfather’s correct middle name “TEN PIN” that
it his highly likely JOSIAH T GIBBS either inherited the same middle
name or perhaps through misspelling or misreading of his name he was
either legally given or formally assumed the middle name “Terpin” – a
very similar name in appearance, especially when handwritten in script
or cursive as many records were commonly recorded - assuming that you
have records to back up the midle name "Terpin" at all. Of course, it
is always possible that his middle name was something entirely
different but probably not likely considering the traditions of the
day. Having said that, if you have any supporting data whatsoever,
such as old documents or a family Bible, suggesting that “Terpin” was
in fact Josiah's middle name, I think you can comfortably assume that
this is correct, or at least as correct as you will ever know for
certain given the lack of any other corroborating or disputing
records. If you prefer to believe that the name “Terpin” was in all
probability derived from his grandfather’s middle name “Ten Pin”
through some sort of mistake or misinterpretation then I think this
probably quite accurate as a logical explanation.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here I will list a number of other interested researchers who are also
seeking and in some instances already have additional information

I am sorry. I mistakenly left out an important link. This census
record should accompany the pargraph with the heading:

In addition, these require a subscription (and I cannot vouch for them
since I do not have a subscription myself). You will also note that
some of the researchers who compiled this information are also under
the impression that the middle name is spelled differently.
