I have been active on the 'Net for many years, and I can't recall ever having given any website my Social Security Number. I am curious: what kinds of sites are asking for this information? |

SSN's are a big part of starting the process towards identity theft. I personally would never release my SSN to any website offering any service (with the exceptions of government websites, such as when submitting my taxes at the beggining of the year). I would really worry if these sites are using the fact that they wish to localize their service to the U.S. only as their justification for collecting your SSN should send a red flag up. Internet Protocol, the protocol that enables the internet to send information accross such vast distances and quickly at that, allows a webmaster to figure out the country of origin for anyone who has ever logged on to his site. Your IP address is part of block of IP addresses that is relatable to a specific country. There are ways of hiding or proxying IP addresses, but most people surfing the web would not know how. |
