There are many weather predicting servies, but I'd like to know a
Google-Genius weather report please.
Is the winter of 03-04 going to be as severely cold and with a
tremendous amount of snow like last year in the northeast USA?
(I dream of South America LOL)
Thanks,
Yesmam

Hello Yesmam-ga!

I’ve done a little search on you here on Google Answers and you ask
some fascinating questions! This one caught my eye right away for a
variety of reasons:

1.	I’d love to think I’m a “Google-Genius”!
2.	I grew up in the northeast.
3.	I’ve lived in Arizona for the past 4 years and we’ve recently moved
 back east.
4.	I, too, dream of warm places (with beaches)!
5.	I recently read some fascinating things about the Farmers’ Almanac.
6.	The northeast had such a horrible winter this past year and we’ve
moved here on the condition that it won’t be like that again for a
VERY long time (more on this later).

===============================================================

First off, my official winter prediction for the northeast:

It will be a mild winter, particularly in terms of amount of snow. It
will snow, enough to be pretty and to have some to play in, but beyond
that, it will be dry. This dryness will help the temperatures feel
more comfortable. Oh, yes, and the snow will only fall on days that we
don’t have to leave the house.

===============================================================

Now, with regards to how I came up with this very official prediction,
may I refer you to #5 and #6 on the list above?

FARMERS’ ALMANAC

The Farmers’ Almanac (which hit newsstands less than a month ago) is
the oldest continuously published periodical in America. The weather
forecasts found in the periodical are written up two years in advance
and the formula is a big secret—even the editors don’t know what it
is! Some criticize the almanac saying that it is impossible to predict
weather so far in advance.

The Almanac boasts a traditional “80 percent accuracy” rate in weather
forecasting. The previous edition of the Almanac correctly predicted
the big blizzard (February 2003) of the northeast; however, the
almanac was not correct in predicting this year’s very wet and soggy
summer. The current edition of the almanac says that the Northeast
will get less snow than this past winter (Hallelujah!) and it goes on
to say that the snow will really hit the northeast around February and
even into April! UGH!

Oh and another interesting thing I learned? The little magazine that
is the Farmers’ Almanac has a hole in the upper left-hand corner, so
that it can hang in outhouses! I’m telling you, reading articles about
the Farmers’ Almanac makes me want to get a copy for myself! I think I
will!

So, as for the predictions, they get it right about 80% of the time.
They’re predicting less snow than usual, though plenty of it in
February, March, and April, so I say this year will contribute to them
being WRONG 20% of the time. They were right this past year. I say
that this year they’re wrong. We’re about due for a mild winter!!

BOQUINHA GETS HER WAY

Truth be told, this is the main reason that I predict a mild winter
for the northeast this year. My father-in-law is forever teasing me
that I always seem to get my way. Not in a “spoiled brat” kind of way,
but more in a persistent determination sort of way. Now, I, of course,
don’t personally control the weather, but part of moving back east for
us was this consideration of weather. As we contemplated moving here
(I am not a big fan of snow and I especially dislike driving in snow),
we figured that this past winter was, according to the locals, “the
worst winter in over 20 years;” therefore, the northeast has “gotten
it out of its system” if you will. It’s time for a mild winter for the
northeast! That’s my prediction and I’m sticking to it!

I hope you find this helpful, interesting, and encouraging. Should you
need further assistance, please let me know. Lock up the shovels and
snow blowers, and break out the windbreakers and cardigans!

Warm wishes (pun intended),
Boquinha-ga

That's one of the nicest compliments that I've ever received in my
life! To be honest, I'm very grateful that I am NEVER BORED and my
mind generates questions like this at a rate of several a day.

"It will be a mild winter, particularly in terms of amount of snow."
From your mouth to God's ears.

I really appreciate the depth of your research and the positive
prediction, and I'm praying for something that is very different than
last year's winter for your sake as well as mine.
Thanks so much,
Yesmam

Well here in the UK, I’ve checked my seaweed, the number of holly
trees with berries and if the Swallows and House Martins are still
with us. So I predict it is going to wet and mild in the UK. Can’t
help for the US – sorry.

Thank you so much for your kind words, the 5-star rating, and your
very generous tip! It is much appreciated! I told my husband what you
wrote and he said, (to the part that says "I am NEVER BORED and my
mind generates questions like this at a rate of several a day."),
"Well, she's like you!" That explains why when I did a search on you
and saw all of your fascinating questions, I got distracted by most,
if not all, of them! Yay for minds that work like ours--it makes life
so much fun!! Thanks again for yet another fun and interesting
question!!

Well, boquinha, I think that we have a mutual admiration socity and I
really appreciate when I come around to meet a fellow "compadre."
I am not an intellectual. Because of dyslexia, I don't get as much
reading done as I would like to, but my MIND IS ALWAYS "in drive." If
you have a computer, a library, a good public radio station nearby,
there is no excuse for boredom. On the other hand, it might be genetic
because my father is the same exact way.
I would love to know how you and other Google Experts came to your
positions?
Thanks again for your nice words and for our mutual appreciation!
Best,
Yesmam

Why, thank you!! My mind is also always "in drive" as you say--while
it IS entertaining, I admit that it can be quite exhausting at times!
As to your great questions, one of my favorites is "Bathrooms in
Space." I can't speak for all researchers, but I personally applied to
become a researcher about the time that Google Answers started. I was
extremely busy at the time and wasn't on here very much at first. But
I am on here pretty much daily these days and enjoying it very, very
much. It is a great opportunity! Thanks again!
