I am looking for a rehabilitation program for my right shoulder. My shoulder has become instable thorugh various sports actitivities such as football, boxing, basketball, and discus throwing. It frequently pops out of place. This often happens when I am doing a reaching out or extending motion like rebounding a basketball, or also through overhand throwing motions. Additionally, direct contact to my shoulder (such as hiting a football sled with my shoulder) also makes it prone to slipping out of the joint. As you can imagine, the problem has made it difficult for me to play sports anymore. This popping out of my shoulder joint has happened about 30-50 times in the last several years, and each time it has happpened, my shoulder has slipped back into the joint on its own about ten seconds later, although it is often sore for several days afterwards. I fear that my shoulder is getting prgressively looser and looser. What I am looking for is a rehabilitation program that will help stablilize my shoulder. Specifically, I want to know the programs and/ or exercises that athletes with a similar problem to mine have gone on that have worked for them. I am already familiar with such exercizes as internal and external rotation to strengthen my rotator cuffs, as well as rear delt flyes. I have done them sporadically, but they have not helped me out a great deal. Hopefully, what you can provide me with is the exact or a similar well rounded rehabilitation program that would be prescribed to an athlete who have suffered a shoulder dilocation or subluxation or any kind of shoulder instability. I know athletes such as football player Ray Lewis and baseball player Derek Jeter have suffered a partial or full shoulder dislocation in the last year or so, and am wondering what they or similar athletes did to rehab their shoulders. |

Hi, relentless999! If another researcher doesn't answer your question I will give it a go when I have some free time. A shoulder that is slipping out of the joint as often as yours is a chronic problem that is likely due to overstretched ligaments. Most strengthening exercises are not going to do much to improve long-term shoulder stability. However, I would still encourage you to exercise and strengthen the shoulder joint area. You might want to consider Prolotherapy. I had it done several years ago for chronic slipping of the sacro-iliac joint, and a friend of mine had several injections in her shoulder ligaments after numerous dislocations. Both of us had good success. You might want to look through the Prolotherapy site at http://www.prolonews.com/ "Prolotherapy is a little known but highly effective method of treating chronic ligament and tendon weakness. In Prolotherapy, the weakened areas are injected with a proliferant solution that directly stimulates the growth of healthy, strong tissues. As the tendons and ligaments grow stronger and more capable of doing their tasks, the pain is alleviated." |

umiat-ga, thanks for the suggestion. I pretty much hate surgeries, pills, injections, etc., so I would only try them as an absolute last resort option. I would like to undergo a throrough rehabilitation program before trying such things as the injection you mentioned. Thanks anyway. |
