I own a car in San Jose, CA that is not running. About a year ago I
took my ownership papers to the DMV and told them that I'll never
drive the car again and want to sell it for parts. They took my
ownership papers and I believe put it in some sort of "ownerless"
state.
I haven't found any junkyards who want the car for parts, and
charities need ownership papers, so now I just want it towed out from
infront of my house. I don't want any money for it, I just want it
gone. So my question is:

What is the cheapest way for me to get rid of this car?

Dear zumpoof-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.

I highly recommend the CHILDREN’S CANCER FUND OF AMERICA, which gladly
takes donated non-running cars. Give them a call at 1-888-205-3853.

CHILDREN’S CANCER FUND OF AMERICA

You can even donate your car online at:
http://www.fast-auto-donation.org/app.htm

They will schedule a free pickup right there where it is sitting at
this very moment AND they’ll give you a receipt for the fair market
value of your car so you can claim the contribution as a tax
deduction. Got no papers on the car? That’s ok, because they don’t
care.

There are many other worthy organizations that do this, by the way, so
if you prefer to help out some other cause check here first:

Alternatively here are 160 different businesses in and around the San
Jose area that might be interested in your car – especially if you are
just giving it away. Call some of them and ask them if they’ll come
tow it away for you. No doubt, one of them will want it, particularly
if it won’t cost them anything.

In addition, here are 66 different businesses that specialize in
automobile wrecking and recycling. Perhaps some of these too would be
interested in simply towing away a free car:

SWITCHBOARD.COM – AUTOMOTIVE WRECKING & RECYCLING
http://www.switchboard.com/bin/cgidir.dll?MEM=1&PR=108&cid=13594&LNK=53%3A2&QV=02FA2085D1C2653F6D303203O01FAF1841012663FAE303203O03F7283D5510663F64313203&C=Automobile+Wrecking+%26+Recycling&L=&A=&T=SAN+JOSE&S=CA&ST=2&SAS=0&Search.x=22&Search.y=14

You might also try calling these organizations to see if they have any
recommendations:

In addition to these, if you are civic minded and like ot have fun I
might also recommend that you offer to donate the car to a civic
group, local school club, or other non-profit organization and help
them arrange for a fundraiser in exchange for just dragging the old
car off. Some organizations hold a “car smash” at a county fair or
other outdoor venue (I've even seen them on shopping mall parking
lots) where they charge people 50 cents or $1 donation to take a
couple of well placed whacks at the car with a sledge hammer. I know
this may sound odd if you’ve never heard of it before but I’ve seen
this done many times and it always tends to be a really fun way to
generate a little revenue for the organization’s worthy cause.

It might be a longshot but you can always check the yellow pages in
your area for Vocational/Technical Schools and Rehabilitation Training
Services that offer courses in auto mechanics. They too are sometimes
interested in using old donated cars to teach auto body repair, engine
repair or auto body painting to students. They don’t expect to be able
to get the car running (though they might actually do it, who knows?)
but they can use the car as a dummy model for teaching various
hands-on techniques and services to those studying to enter the work
force as mechanics.

Finally, if none of these sounds like something you’d be interested in
or if you get no “takers” with your generous offers, I highly
recommend the obvious – simply put a sign on the side of it that says
FREE CAR. My guess is that someone will take it before the week is
out.

Below you will find that I have carefully defined my search strategy
for you in the event that you need to search for more information. By
following the same type of searches that I did you may be able to
enhance the research I have provided even further. I hope you find
that that my research exceeds your expectations. If you have any
questions about my research please post a clarification request prior
to rating the answer. Otherwise, I welcome your rating and your final
comments and I look forward to working with you again in the near
future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.

If you wish to look at a list of charities which accept car donations,
the Google Directory is probably a good place to start:
