Thank you indeed for reading my notes and taking the time to answer
it!
I am an armature photographer and my understanding of medium format
camera is its ability to provide larger (> 8”x10”) prints with vivid
details. In most occasions 35 film camera falls short on this
requirements. But the digital SLR camera should not have problem
generating large prints when it creates 10+ Meg RAW format image
files. Now my dilemma is if I should hunt for a DSLR-pay more now and
be content with 8x10 prints; or look for a used MF- and spend later in
printing and scanning?

There is no answer at this time.

If you are not a professional photographer, I strongly recommend that
you go digital! This is just a comment though, hopefully a different
researcher can give you a more informed answer.

There are many factors to consider.

1: The quality of the lens: many cameras have plastic ones which are
not as good (in my view) as glass.

2: Zoom lenses are not generally as good as fixed focal length.

3: The type of photo you want to take: if you are doing real close-up
stuff then you could be disappointed with some.

Work out in your own mind what you require then talk to SEVERAL people
who really know their stuff.

(When I was shopping around for a digital camera, the 'expert' in a
shop asked me what sort of computer I had: an Apple or a PC? Does it
matter? 'Oh, yes', he said, 'Because, with this camera, you need a USB
port that only the Macs have.' I felt much better knowing that.)

As an avid amateur photographer myself (you can view my work at
http://nsfbr.deviantart.com/gallery ) I would say the two are far
different animals. Perhaps more important, your statement about not
getting details in 35mm as compared to a dSLR is more a statement
about either the skill level your have achieved, or the scanning
quality you are getting, not of the 35mm format itself. 35mm still
far exceeds the quality of digital even at the high end.

This is not to say that you can easily get high quality >8 x 10 prints
from 35mm, you can, but you need to have the proper tools and skill,
but one would have to ask if switching formats is the right answer.
The path I've taken is to commit to learning how to improve my skills
as a photographer, and I still have a long way to go, and to purchase
my own slide and film scanner. That purchase has already nearly paid
for itself after only 3 months in saved scanning costs. If you are
getting high quality photo cds made (not the picture cds that are
essentially garbage), which cost ~$20 a roll on top of developing,
this is a better option. As a plus, you will learn much more about
what is going on since you are now in the loop and will pay much
closer attention to what is going on at the film level.

My longer term plan is to purchase a dSLR in 1 - 2 years, when the
prices have fallen further and the full frame ccds are more readily
available. At that point, I expect large prints will be easily doable
from a dSLR and my skills will justify making them as well.

Hope that helps.

Not that this is important, but the link to my gallery in case you
cared is http://nsfbr.deviantart.com/gallery/ the lack of the last /
in the original link causes you to go off to some incorrect location.

By the way, the front page of that website is www.deviantart.com
there are some trully amazing people that, amateur and professional as
well.

There are a couple of lower cost digital SLRs being released in the
coming months - it works out at under €1500 for a 6 megapixel camera.
I don't know if this helps, but if you are considering switching to
digital, keep your eye out for the new cameras.
