A humble question for all you experts.

We are trying to identify a text device (I guess a pda?) that:
1) we can program with text quizzes
2) We can get the results out of it somehow
3) Is as CHEAP AS POSSIBLE!
4) Is still in production (I think)

We are going to use it with a bunch of teenagers who don't have
computers.

So far, here are the finalists:

1) webtv, which we can buy in bulk new for less than $100 (actually
$65 refurbished)

The problem with webtv is you need to pay a monthly fee... we can't
just have it phone our free bbs... we don't want the students to incur
internet connection charges.

Is there a webtv type device that we buy and program to call our free
local bbs??

2) Zire. Seems like you can buy them in bulk for $75-90 new and maybe
$50 or $60 refurbed

I think we can program a zire and download with a ubs cord the
students results.

any suggestions if zire is our best bet on where to find someone to
help us write the software? and how best to download the students quiz
results?

Hello Thinksmile,

A test you may want to run with a WebTV device is described at
  http://www.w-link.net/Support/dialup.cfm#webtv
where you basically
 [1] Set up WebTV normally
[2] Change the dial in number (and other settings) to use the local
ISP
[3] Power off / on to reset
The device will then connect to the local ISP instead of the Microsoft
site. This does not directly answer your question - but may meet your
needs.
