Hello,
I need to know all the Schools of Social work in the US or in any
other country with a concentration in international social work,
international activities of faculty, as well as study abroad programs.

Request for Question Clarification by czh-ga on 24 Sep 2003 15:12 PDT
Hello juankga-ga,

This is a tougher question to answer than I expected. My search shows
that very few schools offer a major in International Social Work at
any level (BA, MA, Ph.D.) in the U.S. or in any other country. Here is
what I located for you:

-- I’ve identified a handful of schools that offer a major in
International Social Work but there may be others. “All” may be
impossible to find.

-- I have also located lists of schools that offer a major in Social
Work that might be worth exploring one-by-one to see whether they have
a concentration in International Social Work.

-- I’ve located a website that lists almost 100 US sponsored
international social work field study programs. You will have to link
to each school listed to find out details about the programs.

-- In the search process I also collected a variety of general
resources on International Social Work.

Please let me know if this information will be sufficient to answer
your question. I look forward to your clarification.

Hello czh-ga,

Thanks a lot for your message.
I have some info from http://www.cswe.org/cgi-local/programs_list.pl
but I need to know which of them has study-abroad programs. I already
have some info about schools with major in International social work
but all of them DO NOT have international activities for students
and/or student. I also have info about all the international
Universities with schools of social work but I need to know which of
them offer international activities for their students.

If the info you have different to the data I have? Thanks a lot for
your help.

Hello again juankga-ga,

Thank you for the clarification about what information you’ve found on
your own. I located some of the same resources you did, but I also
found additional ones that are more focused on your quest for
international field placements/studies in the field of social work.
I’ve grouped the resources into categories that should help you stay
organized in your search. The best resources I’ve found are listed at
the top.

The International Social Work Field Instruction directory seems the
best place to start. You will have to follow the links to explore each
of the schools listed. Some of the links lead to missing pages but I
found that searching the school’s site you can usually find the
updated pages for the international social work programs.

I’ve also included a sampling of schools that offer a major in
international social work as well as ones that have international
field studies programs. The directories of study abroad programs may
be your best bet for finding a program that will suit your needs.

I hope that the assortment of resources I’ve found will help you with
your search. Wishing you success in your studies.

INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL WORK PROGRAMS
==================================

University of East London
MA International Social Work and Community Development Studies/Refugee
Studies

The recently developed international social work programme at
postgraduate level at UEL has built on the considerable experience
gained in European and international networks; in operating the
undergraduate 'top-up degree'; and in collaborative work with
established masters courses in allied subjects. Development work has
benefited from European Union funding to maintain a SOCRATES network
focused on curriculum development and UEL has links with
Fachhochschule Koblenz, Germany, Bundesakademie Vienna, Austria, and
TEI Athens, Greece, as well as Fachochschule Bern, Switzerland.
However, the programme is also rooted in the multicultural mileau of
East London and recognises the interconnections between European
countries and other parts of the world. A major theme of both courses
therefore is the extent to which globalisation affects national
welfare arrangements and consequently the roles and tasks of social
professionals.

The international social work programme is aimed at people who have
completed courses, normally at undergraduate level, equipping them to
work as social or community workers, in their own countries. Study can
be undertaken on a part-time or full time basis, and includes a two
semester teaching period followed by a 3 month period of independent
project work leading to a dissertation, if taken full time. The taught
part of the course extends over 4 semesters for part-timers with
additional block or part-time project work at the end. (Additional
information about application and selection procedure is appended).

The University of Calgary, Faculty of Social Work offers a
concentration in International Social Work as an option in its
Community Organization, Management, and Social Policy (COMP)
specialization leading to a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. The
objectives of the concentration are to prepare students for social
work practice in international agencies and programs.

The Faculty of Social Work does not offer a formal program in
International Social Work at the BSW level, however, for students who
are interested in this specialization arrangements for appropriate
course selection and international field placement may be offered
through a pre-arranged faculty developed placement in conjunction with
an accredited international social work program. Undergrad
international policy & procedures are under review and are currently
being developed.
