Question ID: 260009
All my address are on my exchange server. I used to access them from
my home PC over MAPI with outlook 2002. For the moment our corporate
firewall is preventing me from connecting to our exchange server from
home.

I can still run outlook 2002 in offline more and get to my contacts
but i can't email from there. I need to use Outlook Express 6 in IMAP
mode.

The problem is that Outlook Express can't access my exchange address
book.

#1 - Is there a way to have Outlook 2002 share an Address Book with
Outlook Express 6

#2 - If not, then is there an EASY way to transfer the contact
(one-time) from outlook to OE?

#3 - If do an export and then start adding contacts in OE, and then,
at a later time, I am able to get a VPN connections through the
firewall, will there be a easy way to xfer the contacts back (or
resync them)?

thanks in advance,

Hi sherpaj!!

Proper answers to computer related questions many times depends on the
configuration of the operative system and also in wich programs and
versions are installed, so i will give the most commons solutions, but
if they donīt work properly, please ask me for more assistance using
the Request of answer clarification feature before rate this answer. I
will gldly provide you all the support needed to accomplish this task.

#1 - Is there a way to have Outlook 2002 share an Address Book with
Outlook Express 6.
The answer is yes but with some restrictions and in some cases you
must do some "advanced" changes to your system.
See the following articles:
"How Do I Share Information Between Outlook and OE"
(NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with
the Internet Mail Only option. To determine your installation type,
click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. If you have the
Internet Mail Only option installed, you see "Internet Mail Only"):
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q196348

If the above article does not work in your PC, you can try this:
"To share Contacts between Outlook and Outlook Express":
'In certain configurations, Microsoft Outlook can expose data in the
Contacts folder to the Windows Address Book (WAB) that Outlook Express
users. In effect, this means that Outlook and Outlook Express are
sharing the contacts. Creating a new contact in the WAB actually
creates a new contact in the Outlook Contacts folder.
Note that if you turn on sharing between Outlook and OE, any data
previously entered in the Outlook Express address book will not be
visible until you turn off sharing. You must choose whether you want
to see Outlook contacts or the original OE address book. You can't
have both.'
To do this there is a registry hack that has been tested with Outlook
2002 and Outlook 2000 CW and OE 5.0 and 6.0 .

#2 - If not, then is there an EASY way to transfer the contact
(one-time) from outlook to OE?

After research in the web and in several forums I conclude that the
most used (and also easier) way to do that is the following:
Using the Outlook's Import/Export Wizard which allows you to export
your Contacts folder as a CSV (comma separated value file) which you
can import into Outlook Express' Address Book.
Just from Outlook highlight your Contact folder go to File >
Import/Export > Export to file > Comma separated File (Windows) >
Ensure the Contact file is highlighted > Follow the Wizard.

Note: If you are using and Exchange personal address book, you can
also try to import it directly from the Outlook Express Import wizard
(File > Import > Other Address Book).

"IMPORTING ADDRESS BOOK FROM MICROSOFT OUTLOOK TO OUTLOOK EXPRESS"
EXPORTING
OPEN MICROSOFT OUTLOOK, CHOOSE FILE, IMPORT AND EXPORT, THEN CHOOSE
EXPORT TO A FILE, AND THEN CLICK NEXT
CHOOSE COMMA SEPARATED VALUES (WINDOWS) AND CLICK NEXT. YOU MAY HAVE
TO HAVE THIS FEATURE INSTALLED OFF YOUR MICROSOFT OFFICE DISK OR
DOWNLOAD IT OFF THE INTERNET
SELECT CONTACTS TO EXPORT AND CLICK NEXT
SAVE THE FILE CLICK NEXT AND THEN CLICK FINISH

IMPORTING
OPEN OUTLOOK EXPRESS, CHOOSE FILE, IMPORT, OTHER ADDRESS BOOK
SELECT TEXT FILE (COMMA SEPARATED VALUES) AND CLICK IMPORT
BROWSE FOR YOUR SAVE ADDRESS BOOK AND CLICK NEXT
CHECK THE BOXES FOR THE FIELDS YOU WOULD LIKE IMPORTED AND CLICK
FINISH"

Note2: it is a good idea to export the address book from Outlook
Express to a comma separated file first just to see the type of
format.
You can preview the cvs file with MS Excel and the Notepad.
