I use Outlook Express 6.0 and am operating under Win XP Pro with all
updates. Every now and then I receive a message with attached or
inserted photos that I can't view. Instead, I see boxes with that
little red "x" in the upper left corners. When I check with the
sender, he assures me that he has checked the "Send Pictures with
Messages" box under Tools/Options/Send/HTML Settings (Mail), so the
prob is presumably not at his end. Furthermore, he tells me others
were able to view the attachments or insertions, and I, too, have been
able to view such attachments or insertions sent to me by others. A
search in MS's knowledgebase has revealed no solutions that are on
point; that is, none that include instructions for situations exactly
like mine. One final point: I have unchecked "Do not allow attachments
to be saved or opened...." under the Options Security tab, thinking
that might be germane to the prob.

What might be causing this sporadic prob?

Do you know what file format the photos are in, such as gif, jpeg or png? Thanks.

They are almost always .jpg files.

It could have to do with how the jpg files are created at the sender's
end. Can you find out what program he used to create the files in
question?

Hi nautico!!

I want to do a shot in the dark: Are you using an antivirus software
that works integrated or at least check the incoming mails?

And why not try with another blind shot: does your POP3 service
provider has the posibbility to check the mails as a webmail account,
try to use this option, this is not the solution but will let you
download and see to the image files.

Regards.

Livioflores: yes, I do use NAV and it is integrated with OE,
intercepting, quarantining, and deleting the new spate of worms and
viruses that's been putting us all under seige. Since my inability to
view photo attachments is only sporadic, however, it's not the reason
for that prob. I use Time-Warner Roadrunner, which does not include a
webmail option. Thanks, though, for your suggestions.

KnowledgeSeeker: I recd the following from the sender of those msgs
having unviewable (for me) photo attachments:

"I sent the .jpg files via AOL. I also downloaded them from the
internet
via AOL. I did not bring them into any program other than AOL."

Just learned also that the .jpg files were transmitted from a Mac,
though that wouldn't seem to have anything to do with my inability to
view them, since other Windows users were able to. C'est une mystere.

Yes, truly a mystery.

I did find this --

Which seems to indicate that how the file was made and which color
format it was in, might have an effect on whether or not a Windows
user could see it. Maybe there's something to that?

KnowledgeSeeker: I had unconvered a similar article about colors in
the MS knowledgebase and would agree that it might be operative if
only other Windows users were having the same trouble as I with
respect to .jpg attachments from the same originator. I'm going to
chalk it all up to the vagaries of Windows and throw in the towel on
this one.

Thanks, Pink! I had seen all three of those references, but if you
take another look at the details in my question, you'll note that none
of them is really on point.

Hi!
You may try to do a trick:
press button 'Forward' and may be attachment appear in 'Attach' field.
Of course - no needs to send this 'forward'
