This is such a common phrase that I doubt any origin can be traced. As
for meanings, do you have any particular context in mind? If you could
provide a bit more for us to work with, it would be easier to answer
your question.

The phrase seems to have come into use in the early 1800's. I can
provide several examples from works by Charlotte Bronte, Honore de
Balzac, and others, if you'd like.

Before then, there is no indication in the sources I searched that the
phrase was in use...at the very least, it does not appear to have been
common prior to the 19th century.

Let me know if you'd like me to post the information I have as an
answer to your question.

Well I dont know if this is what you are asking for but i can tell you
that in the hebrew and the greek words the word love is broke into
many different catogories, the word agape is like and unconditonal
love the philoe is liek a brotherly love and so forth. this might
help in your researh to find your answer, many of todays sayings stint
from saying that was translated from the biblical times but if you
break down the greek and the hebrew words you will find out that they
are very close to what you are looking for i beleive. So as the words
was translated from greek and hebrew to what we now call old english.
I hope this helps you out some.
