I'm looking for the name of a book that I stumbled upon in a bookstore
about 4 or 5 years ago.  It was a narrative story about a prominent
gastroenterologist and his battle to help his wife after she was
diagnosed with stomach cancer.

Sorry for not giving a more precise search strategy. When I first
noticed your question, another researcher had it locked. I played
around with various search terms for a few minutes but I didn't really
pay much attention to (or save) the exact search combination because I
didn't think I would be providing an answer.

At this point, my best guess is that I used some variation on this:

1998 book wife "stomach cancer" gastroenterology
