Ok, this is a long shot. I'm guessing a lot of the researchers here are USA based, but with your Google skills you could probably still help me out. If you are from the USA and still want to try and help me out, please see the note to USA researchers at the bottom of this question :) I am looking for a few UK Internet Provider that offers 0800 Internet access - and the dial up number being an 0800 one and NOT the 0808 number that the majority of ISP's have converted to. The reason being is that I have a phone line in my University flat which allows 0800 numbers out, but no other numbers unless I pay a monthly fee much larger then that of an ISP. Many ISP's claim to offer "0800 Internet access" but actually use an 0808 dial up number. I will accept no other answer other than one containing one or more ISP's Names / Monthly Charge and Dial Up Number in full (either posted here or linked to) and that number to be an 0800 number. Be careful that the number is present and valid, an old non-ISP site may still list a number for an ISP that has since closed or migrated to the 0808 number. Note to US Researchers: In the UK, we have free phone dial up numbers for our Internet access which for a monthly subscription you can use the free phone number and not pay any call charges (instead of using a per minute charged number). Free phone (non-geographic) numbers are 0800, 0500, 0808. In recent years for reasons not relevant the majority of Internet providers have switched from using 0800 numbers to using 0808 numbers. While this is still free, it is not recongised by my University switch board and therefore only an 0800 number will do. We also have non-geographic local call rate numbers 0845, 0345 which also won't do. Only 0800 numbers are acceptable :) Thanks |

I have found http://www.chic.cc/0800/ which appears to be current. They say: NTL Cable Phone Users CAN access our service : If this is you please request our 0800 dial-up server rather than the standard 0808 FRIACO server. There is currently an additional once only set-up fee of £10 for this 0800 server, and we can only offer the unlimited £11.95 service without roaming. It appears your phone line will have to transmit Calling Line Identity as the standard service is from one phone number only. Their prices run from about GBP 11 /month for 24-hour access down to GBP 5 / month for 'night owl' access only, which might suit you if you have daytime access from computer labs. One option you could also consider is getting your own 0800 number from a number of suppliers eg http://www.telesave.co.uk/atwork/0800.htm "Telesave at work will charge you nothing for providing you with your own 0800 number and just 4p per minute to receive calls on it!" You could get one 0800 number set up to forward to an 0845 or geographic ISP - just had a thought, I don't know if you could get an 0800 number to forward to the ISP's 0808 :-) - and another to forward to a call-through service such as Telediscount.co.uk which would allow you to make voice calls. I used googlegroups to search news:uk.telecom for cheapest 0800 for the Telesave information. Owain |

There's a reason why "freephone" ISP's don't use the 0800 range of numbers any more and it's down to the FRIACO system they use that the other commenter above mentioned. FRIACO numbers are specifically intended for internet access, hence the acronym (flat rate internet access call origination) and they cover the 0808 range, the 0800 range is meant for free non internet calls. You won't be able to find an ISP that offers 0800 access at all any more because of this system. Best bet is to get in touch with the people at your uni and talk them round to offering you access to 0808 numbers considering they're all classified as being free too. |

noggywoggy-ga: I was well aware of the reasons behind the change implemented by UK telco's - but as stated in my post these reasons are not relevant. I am also aware that a minority of company's do *still* offer 0800 access for reasons similar to my situation and I would assume that these company's charge for this privilege. owain-ga: Many thanks for your reply, you did great assuming (from some of your terminology used) that you are aren't British! I will e-mail these people and see what they have to offer. I am a little wary of that site though, .cc not being an UK domain and the page layout looking a little to WYSIWYG to be trusted at first glance and to be taken seriously as a "reliable" ISP. Good going so far guys, we're getting closer! :) |
