How do you convert the calculated value of a formula into that actual
value?

That is, if I have a cell that contains a formula that says "+a1+1"
how do i get excel to change the contents of that cell from the
formula to the result of the formula?

Hello Skip9801,

The comment from respree is certainly correct and can be found in
Excel using
 Help -> Search Help
and entering value as the search phrase. One of the choices should be
  Replace a formula with its calculated value
which has the same instructions. If that meets your needs - I suggest
you close the question. If you have some problems with this, post a
clarification request so you can get a more complete answer.

1. Place cursor on formula
2. [CTRL] C (to copy)
3. Edit - Paste Special - Values

Did you type "a1+1" or "=a1+1"? You must have the = sign before all
forumals otherwise Excel just thinks your typing some word and not a
formula you want it to calculate.
