Basic biographical information on Howard Reich has been published in a
database for researchers compiled by the Gale Group called
Contemporary Authors Online. It may be available through your local
public library as part of a Gale Group service called the Biography
Resource Center.

I cannot link you to, or reproduce, the relevant entry because of
copyright considerations, but the basic data published on Mr. Reich
includes the following facts:

Date of birth: April 19, 1954
Place of birth: Chicago, Illinois
Education: Northwestern University, B. Mus., 1977
Career: Arts critic and jazz critic, Chicago Tribune, 1983-
Awards: He was made a Fellow of the Music Critics Association in 1976;
he was awarded a key to the city of Fort Worth, Texas in 1993 and has
received a Beck Award from Chicago Tribune.

I have also found supplementary information on awards received by Mr.
Reich. According to information from the publisher of Reich's recent
book, "Jelly's Blues":

"Howard Reich is the veteran jazz critic of the Chicago Tribune and
winner of the Deems Taylor Award, two William Jones Investigative
Reporting Awards, and three Peter Lisagor Awards from the Society of
Professional Journalists, among other honors."

I neglected to include my search strategy in my answer. I began with
Google searches using a variety of search term combinations, including
the following:

"howard reich"
"howard reich" tribune critic
reich tribune critic awards
"howard reich" tribune bio OR biography

When these and other similar searches turned up the awards listed
above and no other relevant information, I used the online research
tools of my local public library. After some experimentation with a
variety of such tools, I found the information on the proprietary
database identified above.

Thank you for the great answer. I am confused, however, as to why
google did not email me notification when my question was answered!
Luckily I checked back often.... but it was strange that I didn't get
an email.
