So many things are going around the internet about being able to
register a domain for free through contacting uunet!postmaster and
uunet!domain-request. If someone's looking to register a large amount
of domains, a few hundred, what would be the most economical way about
going about things?
Also can domains be registered without paying a fee? Thanks for your
expertise in advance.

In doing further research it appears as though ISP's are able to do
this domain registration via use of their registars. But that still
doesn't answer the question of how do to it ourselves. Could we just
hook-up a server to the net and start registerting?

Do you need a standard domain suffix such as .com or .net, or would
you be willing to accept an offbeat domain suffix such as .qr or .vl?
The quick answer is that if you require a standard domain, there's no
such thing as free. That's probably also true with the other suffixes,
but I wouldn't know for certain without further research.

To properly answer the question I would need to know what TLDs (top
level domains/the characters after the last dot of the complete domain
name) you are talking about.

I'm guessing you are referring to the most common generic TLDs (there
are also country-specific TLDs) .com and .net. The two choices you
have is then to go to an accredited ICANN registrar, or becoming one
yourself. If you the amount of domains planned to register is not more
than a few hundred, the first is certainly the most economic.

The ICANN accredited registrars also pays a few bucks per domain and
year, but less than what you will pay. There are certain of those who
have targetted bulk registrations and resellers by selling out
'reseller accounts' to clients. You will get the very best price by:
1) Getting a reseller account through another reseller that has put in
a big deposit, or, 2)putting in a big deposit yourself

Acting by the above you can get down to about USD 6-7 per domain and
year in the .net and .com TLDs.

If you will settle for another, country specific, TLD the only one
free one I know about is .tk (for the country Tokelau). They do
however charge you if you want full DNS services for the domain (even
if you use your own nameservers).
