sulafa-ga: The performance of the AirPort Extreme will depend on what's inside those walls between the living room and the office, and the orientation of the doorways relative to the AirPort and your computer. If the radio signals are blocked (by, say, too much metal in the walls, or an active interference source like a 2.4 GHz-based phone or video system), then you will not get a good connection (or even no connection at all). If you are in a wood-frame home, with drywall for your interior walls, you should be fine. With the AirPort Extreme, which operates using the 802.11g protocol, you have the best chance of maintaining a usable connection, as long as you are also using a 802.11g wireless network adapter in the laptop and the Mac. To secure the connection, use the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) capabilities of the AirPort Extreme. Please note that you may need to use the 64-bit WEP encryption key setting (instead of the 128-bit or higher) as there are often compatibility issues when using 128-bit encryption and adapters/access points from different manufacturers. Also, if the AirPort Extreme permits it (I do not have access to one right now to check), use MAC Address Filtering to ONLY permit your two computers to use the wireless connection. Not all access points support this, but if yours does, it helps immensely. Regards, aht-ga |
