I'm looking for a 1986 news article from the Syracuse Post-Standard
about a sea turtle rescuing a 52 year old woman who was stranded in
the ocean after a ship wreck.

Hello Alpha52,

I located two articles and a posting in a newsgroup about the
Philippine woman who was rescued by a sea turtle.

Do you require the Syracuse Post-Standard newspaper article or would
the articles I mentioned suffice as the answer to your question?

Thanks,
Bobbie7

I failed to mention that I searched The Post-Standard Archives and I
did not find the article.

I located two more articles where the name of the woman, the date of
the incident and the name of the ship is provided.

Would this be an adequate answer to your question?

Thanks,
Bobbie7

Hi bobbie7-ga,
I put in a call to the Syracuse Post-Standard about obtaining a copy
of the article, but have yet to recieve a reply.
My main objective is to make sure that this story is true. I am using
this event as an example in a speech I have to do for a college class.
So the details are not so important as getting the names, dates,
authors etc., plus any information as to WHY the sea turtle did this.
So let me know.
Thanks
Alpha52

Bobbie,
Wow that was some good investigating! A couple of the websites did not
have all that much, just a repeat of what you had written me in the
comment line about the event itself. I called the Post-Standard and
they directed me to the NY State Library. It seems the actual rescue
took place in 1974, so it's a bit in the past for the web archives to
be of much help - unless you know of a site that DOES go back that
far.
I will email Mark at the forteantimes site too.
Again thank you

Alpha52-ga,

Thanks for the update!

Unfortunately I was not able to locate additional information.

I hope Mark at the Forteantimes is able to confirm the story for you.

Would you like me to post my comments as the offical answer if Mark is
able to confirm the story?

Hello Alpha52,

This is the information I discovered, however, I really can’t say if
it’s accurate.

Tuesday, June 04, 2002
[According to the Fortean Times:]
“June 4. On this day in 1974, Mrs Candelaria Villanueva, 52, had been
in the sea with a lifejacket for more than twelve hours after the ship
she was on, the Aloha, caught fire and sank 600 miles south of Manila,
Philippines. A giant sea turtle appeared beneath her and supported her
until her rescue by the navy vessel Kalantia. A smaller turtle climbed
on her back and bit her every time she felt drowsy and was in danger
of submerging her head in the water. After the rescue, the bigger
turtle circled the area twice before taking off.”

Perhaps if you contact the Fortean Times, they can give you more
information.

Here are a few more articles about the sea turtle rescue. None of them
cite the source of the story.
