Hey Gran, I took a look at " "Good to Me as I m to You" (by Aretha Franklin & Ted White) on pages 30-32 of the songbook, "Aretha, the queen of soul" produced by John L. Haag. Ojai, Calif. : Creative Concepts Pub. Corp., c1994. Your transcription of the first stanza is the same as Haag's except he says "... as easy as you could mine" (instead of "...easily..."). --------- "Be-cause when you need my love and I give time after time And turn around to find me no returns__ Then my friend you've used my time --------- As for the next stanza ("if there's water in the pitcher")... Your transcription is the same as Haag's, except he ends with: "...these things I say I say are true / All I'm really saying is be as good to me as I am to you" --------- "Oh. Listen to this! Some people want______ But they don't want to give____ They can do all of the wrong in the world But got the nerve to not know the meaning of let live We'll start in today Tomorrow and forever - more____ If you can't find it in your heart to do for me Then baby just don't knock at my front door Baby. I want you to be as good to me as I am to you. Oh! Oh! Baby. I don't think that's asking too much to do. ---------- search strategy: library catalog author: franklin aretha I hope this helps. ;-) |

thanks for providing those crucial lines, J-man. had to take issue with Mr. Haag's translation. Aretha's never said "oh" in her life...she says "wooooowwhooa." appreciate always the kindness you show to granny. |

Oh, Granny, I'd sure like to help, but I can't find my "Lady Soul" LP. Must have gotten lost in the shuffle during one of the many moves since my college days. It's strange how you don't miss something like this until you realize it's gone. :-( |

Hi Granny, There's a book of sheet music called "Aretha-the Queen of Soul" that contains the song. Presumably, there's a transcription of the lyrics in there. http://sflib1.sfpl.org/search/t?SEARCH=+Aretha-the+Queen+of+Soul.+&image.x=0&image.y=0&image=Submit+Search I might be able to swing by that library at some point and do some xeroxing if no one else comes up with anything over the next week or so. ;-) -j |

I think we got ... or somethin' close: if you had a dollar and I had a dime I wonder could I borrow yours as easy as you could mine because when you need my love and I give time after time because when you need my love and I give time after time and turn around to find me no returns then my friend you've used my time (dime) if there's water in the pitcher and we both need a drink tooooo stay alive, my darlin' I'd need les-sah water than you think my love, my love, these things I say (swear), I say, are true be as good to me as I am to you oh yeaahhh listen to this some people want but they don't want to give they can do all of the wrong in the world but (and) got the nerve to not know (understand) the meaning of let live we'll start in (starting) today tomorrow and forever - more if you can't find it in your heart to do for me then baby just don't you -- don't you knock at my front door whooooaahhh baby. I want you to be as good to me as I am to you. Oh! Oh! (wooooow) baby. I don't think that's asking too much to doooo-hoo. listen, don't you walk around here feeling you can treat me any old way using my love my time my heart day-yeah after day wooooow baby baby be as good to me as I am to me wooooow wooooow bayyyy-hey-beee |

Thank you very much for the tip, Granny. Sorry that Haag's transcription was not 100% accurate. :-( Not surprised, though. A lot of those pop music scores/songbooks have inaccuracies. I was looking at a Beach Boys book a while ago. Checked out one of my favorite tunes, "Cabinessence." The book had the lyric: "...the constellations ebb and flow..." transcribed as: "...the Constellation Evan flows..." Admittedly, I'm not an astronomer, but I don't believe there's a constellation named Evan. ;-) Thanks again, j |
