I am running XP Professional in a PC that I built. I have a standard
CD-RW drive and an ASUS A7N8X motherboard. The CD_RW worked fine until
I updated the BIOS to 1006 from the ASUS website. It is enabled and
detected as fully functional by the system. It just does not register
when a disc is inserted. I have deleted and reinstalled the drivers as
well as verified all physical connections. Any ideas?

Does it read the data already written on the CD-RW disc? Is it unable
to erase?

If the latter, then I have experienced such a problem before. I had to
bring the CD-RW to another computer (with a CD-RW drive) to erase;
after doing so, the disc worked fine on my own computer. Try that; let
me know if it works. It's as if the disc needs "resetting".

It won't detect any disc. Nothing at all. Not just RW discs.

Your problem seems to be some sort of communication error. Some questions:

Are you sure you got the correct BIOS update for your system?

Have you tried enabling plug and play settings in your BIOS?

Have you tried using a different cable for your drive?

Could it have something to do with slave/master/cable select
configurations? If there is only one device on the ATA bus with the
CD-RW drive, it should be set to Master or Cable Select. If there are
two devices, one should be Slave, one should be Master, or both should
be Cable Select.

(I'm just trying different possible solutions - I realise that this
may not be the problem.)

Try using a CD drive cleaner. Use the one without liquid. The lens
might just be dirty.
