Question ID: 263096
What is a reasonable price to pay for bifocal prescription lenses (not
including the price of the frames) with anti-scratch, anti-reflective
coating, and no-line progressives? Assume this is not a name brand
company (the optical shop is owned by the eye doctor). This is for
near-sightedness with astigmatism.

My optician wants $275 just for the lenses and I am wondering if that
is reasonable.

Thank you.

Howdy Cynthia,

From the various estimates I found on the net, and considering
that you are getting "fully loaded" lenses, it appears that your
optician's pricing is around average.

Texas State Optical of Galveston is a bit higher than $275.
http://www.tsogalveston.com/pricing/

"Varilux and Zeiss Progressive lenses including scratch
coating and ultraviolet protection. $210
Zeiss, Transparence and Crizal antireflective coating $80"

Texas State Optical of San Marcos might be cheaper, but be aware
of the whole "starting at" pricing.
http://www.tsosanmarcos.com/pai-p01.htm

"Progressive lenses including scratch coating and ultraviolet
protection starting at $169.00
Anti-reflective coating starting at $50.00"

Eye-doctor.com's simplified pricing runs a bit lower.
http://www.eye-doctor.com/simplifi.htm

"PAL-08 Plain standard plastic AO Compace with Anti-Reflection
Coating added $255.67"

FramesDirect.com ranges from lower to higher, but averages close
to your optician's pricing.
http://www.framesdirect.com/varilux-progressive-info.asp

"Varilux Panamic Polycarbonate w/ Anti-Reflective $258.00
...
Varilux Comfort Polarized CR-39 $299.00"

39DollarGlasses.com's "Lens Replacement - Use Your Own Frame"
pricing can be cheaper, depending on the package.
http://www.39dollarglasses.com/cgi-bin/store/product_info/use_your_own_frame.html

"Clear Lenses
Package L - Varilux® Polycarbonate Progressives $128.00

Tinted/Polarized Sun Lenses
Package M - Polarized Polycarbonate Flat-Top 28 Bifocal Sun Lenses $177.90

Clear Inside/Dark Outside Lenses
Package O - VisionEase® Outlook® Tegra® Transitions® Progressive Lenses $187.90
Package P - Varilux® Polycarbonate Transitions® Progressives $226.90

Special Add-On's:
Premium Anti-Reflective Coating $24.95

All packages include Scratch & UV Protection, polished lens edges,
and a stylish hard case at no additional charge!"

This "VisionAiry" on AOL website warning should be heeded.
http://users.aol.com/visionairy/

"New progressive wearers frequently experience rejection, which
requires close personal contact to correct. This type of service
obviously cannot be duplicated over the web."

Considering it is your optician's own shop, you will no doubt be
getting very personalized service, and your optician will also
no doubt be able to make any adjustments you need in a more
timely manner than a place that farms the lense work out to an
outside lab. There is probably some trade off in your optician's
costs between lower overhead but a greater cost for materials
due to smaller volume discounts from suppliers.

If you need any clarification, feel free to ask.

Top-notch. Over the top. Excellent summary and conclusion. (And I
am relieved to know that the price is average.)
