Hello flyfish-ga,
There is definitely information available on the size of the
fly-fishing market in the U.S for 2002 and earlier years.
The total market size is available, as is a bit of more specific data
on particular regions and market segments; e.g. amount spent on rods
vs flies. To get really detailed information, however, you would have
to purchase a special market-research report on the fly fishing
industry, which runs into the hundreds of dollars.
I have not seen comparable market data for the rest of the world,
however...as far as I can tell, the US data is all there is.
Would you like me to post the U.S. information as an answer to your
question?

To clarify.
I actually have a report on the US fly fishing market for 2002. This
was limited however to retail selling only, doesnt include direct
internet sales , nor does include the # of people in the US or world
who participate and how much they spend

One mre bit of clarification. This study didnt even ask what the
influence of the internet was on shopping for fly fishing equipment..
i'm sure that answer as part of the bigger question is out there.

Hello again,
Thanks for clarifying what you're after.
I have access to summary information for a fly-fishing market report,
which appears to be more comprehensive than the one you have available
(the report I have, at least, discusses the impact of internet sales).
The best I can do is describe the report in more detail. If it seems
of interest to you, I can post full information as an answer and if
you're so inclined, you can purchase the full report for even more
details.
The fly-fishing market study for the US describes an almost $700
million industry in considerable detail, including:
--breakouts of sales for rods, reels, flies, line sales and apparel
(waders, etc)
--regional geographic breakouts for, e.g. the Rockies vs the West
--time of year when sales are at their greatest
--gender breakouts
--yield per square foot of brick and motar establishments
--store sales vs mail order vs internet sales
...and so on.
NOTE that I do not have full access to these numbers...I only have
just the few tidbits made available in the summary report.
I did not see any mention of "travel" as a category for which cost and
market information was provided.
Let me know if this is of interest, and if so, I'll be glad to post
the information I have as an answer to your question (you might also
want to mention the name of the fly-fishing market report you have, to
make 100% sure we are working from separate reports).

OK...looks like we're working off pretty much the same resources, so
I'm not sure I have much to contribute.
But I am a bit confused. The AFFTA market report described here:
http://www.affta.com/601.htm
includes a description of internet marketing:
"The role of the Internet in day-to-day operations is becoming
increasingly important - the percentage of stores offering Internet
sales has eclipsed the percentage offering mail order/catalog sales;
Internet sales are up 22.6%; the majority of fly-fishing retailers use
the Internet as a business tool".
Is this type of discussion included in the report you have as well?

Yes the AFFTA report talks briefly about the web, but only as it
relates to traditional retail. It doesn't include big, direct to
consumer numbers from players like Orvis and Cabela's.. nor does it
include the dozens of web only sellers out there.
I guess you are as stuck as I am.
I still can't even find a guess as to the number of participants of
the sport!

AFFTA puts the figure at 13 million fly fishers in the US.
Good luck with the rest of your quest...sorry I couldn't be more help on this one.
