Hello.
I would find this information by checking Los Angeles or New York
newspapers from 1965.
My local library has a trial subscription to the New York Times
historical archive, so I did a search of the New York Times for 1965
and discovered that Los Angeles-New York City roundtrip fares that
year were in the $209-$320 range.
For example, on Page XX-20 of the February 14, 1965 issue of the New
York Times, a travel agent called Anchor Travel Service advertises
"Jet via TWA, New York - Los Angeles roundtrip $110 one way of
complete roundtrip." On the same page, another travel agent
advertises, "Jet TWA to Calif. $217.65 roundtrip."
On May 23, 1965, on page XX-28, Anchor Travel Service was again
advertising TWA flights between New York and Los Angeles. On that
date, Anchor's ad indicated that you could "Jet Non-Stop to Los
Angeles... from $104.55 each way of round trip."
On August 15, 1965, on page XX-20, a travel agent called "Rainbow
Travel Service" ran an ad that read: "California. 25% discount. TWA &
United Non-Stop Jets every Thurs. Fri & Sat from $104.55 each way
on... round trip."
In an article on February 28, 1965, the New York Times reported that
United Air Line's standard one-way fares (based on round trip
purchase) from New York to Los Angeles were: $145 coach class, $150
standard class, and $160 first class.
