<US Wood Stove Market
According to ATSDR there are 13 million wood stoves in the U.S. This
site gives a figure of 800,000 sold per year but the figures quoted by
the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association are probably more reliable
(see below).

There has been a decline in sales in recent years mainly due to lower
gas prices. Some areas have implemented incentive schemes to encourage
wood stove owners to replace old stoves with environmentally friendly
wood stoves. Increased sales could be generated by encouraging owners
to replace their old stoves and highlighting the benefits of more
efficient models which could save householders money. For example in
Okanagan, Canada it is estimated that 89% of stoves are inefficient.

Sales
The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association collects industry statistics.
In 2002, 535, 836 wood burning appliances were shipped in the United
States. Wood appliances have a 36 percent share of the market. Between
2001 and 2002 the number of appliances decreased by 18 percent from
637,856. The last decade has seen a decrease in the number of wood
appliances by 2 percent. There were 548,000 units shipped in 1992. The
reduction is due to the increased popularity of gas units.

In total 251,483 free-standing stoves were shipped in 2002. An
estimated 90,533 free-standing wood stoves (36%).

Hi,
Thanks for the research. It is good but it does not include a lot of
new info compare to what I found through my google research.
Can we find other statistics than HPBA? I had already those ones.
Can we find info about retailer and customer profiles in USA (you find
Canada but I am focusing on the US market).
The consumption of cord wood in USA includes fireplace, I am looking
about info on wood stove = wood freestanding appliance.

<I have some EPA statistics and a profile of wood burners in Oklahoma.
I also found the percentage of wood that is burned in stoves which
should help in interpreting the cord wood figures. One of the links
gives a details of the various survey that have been carried out about
wood burning. I also came across wood stove exchange programs and have
included links to these.

A study carried out into wood burning in Oklahoma found that wood
stoves account for 24% of wood heat systems.
90% of wood users are homeowners. Apartments, duplexes and mobile
homes are less likely to use wood. The majority of wood is used in
single family dwellings. Age is not a factor. Wood burners tend to
have higher incomes than non-burners. Their household income was
almost $14,000 higher than non-burners. Set up costs could be a
potential barrier to fuel wood usage by low income households. Wood
burners tend to be located in rural areas.

Conventional wood stoves ? 8.3 million in use.
Certified noncatalytic woodstoves ? 0.6 million in use.
Certified catalytic woodstoves ? 0.4 million in use.
89% of wood heaters are conventional wood stoves.
8% of wood heaters are certified stoves.
3% of wood heaters are pellet stoves.

Hi,
I do not know if it is not too late for me to ask you another
clarification question but here it is:
I have the name of stove manufacturers in USA but I will need also the
average retailer price of the stove (to narrow the research, stove
around 35,000 BTU heat output capacity) to complete my market
analysis. So to be more clear, it is not the customer selling price
that I need but the price that retailers pay to the manufacturer. It
is a critical point for my business plan...
I hope to hear from you soon,
Thanks
Julie
