Track U.S. and Mexican inflation information for the years 2002/2003 .
Briefly explain how inflation is measured in the two countries - try
to use similar price indexes in both countries for your comparison.

I need a monthly chart tracking the inflation of each country for both
years. The second part of the question, regarding explaining how
inflation is measured in each country by using the same price index in
each country to explain that comparison was something I needed help
with and that is why I am here. Thanks!

I tried and think that this is a tough one. No problem with the US
info but the main problem I had is finding the calculation procedure
for the Mexican inflation rate.

I would think there would be a site that would have calculated the
inflation rate as a percentage? What is a fair price to get the rest
of the question answered. I really need help.

Hi! Thanks again for another question.

I was able to find the monthly inflation rates for the US and Mexico
for the years 2002 to 2003. I will use the CPI (Consumer Price Index)
as the basis. I created them in Excel files and generated the charts
as well. I uploaded the Excel file at the Village Photos website.

You can get it through this link.
http://home.villagephotos.com/2003-9/26694/inflationcharts.xls

In case you don't have Microsoft Excel. You can download an Excel
viewer for free in our next link.

--------------------------------------------
I got the data for the Mexico inflation figures from the Banco De
Mexico website. Unfortunately, the direct link for the actual result
does not work so you have to generate them yourself if you want to
check my figures. You can generate the data yourself by following the
instructions below.

1. Just go to this link
(http://www.banxico.org.mx/SiteBanxicoIngles/eInfoFinanciera/FSinfoFinanciera.html)

2. Click or check on the very first box to get the monthly inflation
rate using CPI.

3. Then in the “Period” box type in 2002.

4. Then click on the “Accept button.

---------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, the computation for the CPI for Mexico can also be acquired
from the Banco De Mexico website. It shows the percentages and weights
to calculate them.

“Índice Nacional de Precios al Consumidor y sus Componentes”
http://www.banxico.org.mx/siteBanxicoINGLES/eInfoFinanciera/FSinfoFinanciera.html

The problem with this is that the terms are in Spanish. I used Alta
Vista’s Online Translation program to translate them to English.

Translation of some Spanish Words to English:

Subyacente – Underlying
Mercancías – Merchandise
Servicios – Services
Agropecuarios – Farming
Frutas y verdures – Fruits and Vegetables
Resto de agropecuarios - Rest of farming
Administrados y concertados - Administered and arranged
Educación – Education

The US inflation data meanwhile was gathered from this website.

“Inflation Rate in Percent for Jan 2000-Present”
http://inflationdata.com/Inflation/Inflation_Rate/CurrentInflation.asp

An explanation on the computation of the US inflation rate can be read
in our next link.

“How Do I Calculate the Inflation Rate?”

Here is a link to the official word on US CPI.

Can I ask one more thing? When I download the charts, the top one on
mexico has the baseline information overlapping onto the graph so it
is kind of tough to read. Can you fix that so it is cleanly and
clearly below the graph like the US one below it? Thanks again.

Hi!

The best thing I can do is to stretch and make the chart bigger. But
aside from that I don't think there is much more we can adjust.

Here is the adjusted chart

Thanks again!

Would you be willing to help me answer the following since you helped
me with the first two? I would offer the same price as the last time
($30). Let me know asap! Thanks so much.

Use the data from 1 and 2 to figure out what happened to the real
exchange rate in 2002/2003. Explain. After presenting the real
exchange rate movement, analyze the impact of this movement on a U.S.
manufacturing subsidiary located in Mexico that is primarily producing
for the U.S. market.

Hmmm! This seems to be a little bit beyond me. Maybe you should post
it as another question so that another researcher, who mght be
knowledgeable about this piece of information, would be able to
provide you with a more adequate answer.

Thanks!
