Question ID: 264532
A couple of years ago, word 2000 running on my win 2K machine became
corrupted. Of course all I wanted to do was uninstall & then
reinstall word. I tried everything I could find, including
Microsoft's "eraser", but nothing would completely remove the
corrupted word 2000, so that the reinstallation would be pristine. I
finally reinstalled windows in order to get rid of the corrupted word
program. Guess what? It's baaack!!
It's now corrupted in a different way, but the result is the
same......I can't uninstall word. And I just don't feel like going
through the hassle of resintalling windows again. So here's my
question: Is there third-party software that will DEFINITELY
uninstall ms word?

Hi Jerry,

"I finally reinstalled windows in order to get rid of the corrupted
word program."

Can you tell us if you did a clean install or did you just
over-install Win2K over your existing installation?

"...but nothing would completely remove the corrupted word 2000"

Can you please elaborate on this part so that we can have a better
picture of the situation?

Do you use/have a utility like Scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor to scan
your drive's integrity?

What kind of partitioning do you use -- FAT32 or NTFS?

Please tell us so that those who want to answer your question can get
an idea on how to approach your problem in order to make a solution.

Regards,
Feilong

feilong: I went & bought & downloaded the "uninstaller" software
referred to by jackburton. It didn't work. But after throwing $30
out the window, I got very irritated, and went into the registry. I
deleted every key titled "microsoft word" that I could find (there
were quite a few), reinstalled word, and voila......no more
corruption. I just wish that I had known about that solution a long
time ago.

Hi pjblevin!!

I post this as a comment because you ask for a third party software,
and this talk about a method for uninstall Office 2000.

In the Microsoft's site I found the page when you can download the
ERASER, and in this page there are some statements that you must know:
"OFF2000: Utility to Completely Remove Remaining Office CD1 Files and
Registry Entries":
-The Office 2000 File and Registry Eraser Utility does not run on
operating systems later than Windows 2000.
-Microsoft does not recommend or suggest that you use the Office 2000
File and Registry Eraser Utility on Microsoft Windows Server systems,
which include those running Small Business Server. This issue can also
affect a Windows Workstation when used as a server. It is possible
that this utility can cause your system to stop responding when you
restart your system (note that this depends upon the state of your
system).
-Running Windows 2000, many shared system components are not removed,
such as MDAC and the Windows Installer program.

But there are more help for you at this site:
"OFF2000: How to Completely Remove Office CD1 on Windows 2000":
'This article describes how to completely remove Microsoft Office 2000
from a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000. This article
includes files installed from CD1 and does not apply to other CDs
included with your edition of Microsoft Office 2000.'
This is a "step by step how to manually remove" article.

If you want to try repairing Word before see this page:
"MICROSOFT WORD TROUBLESHOOTING"
Look for the article Troubleshooting Word by Linda F. Johnson (just
scroll down the page a little).

If you find this helpful enough please let me know and I will post it
as an answer so I can be able to claim the prize.

Jackburton: Here's a copy of a message I sent to feilong about the ms
word corruption. It's fixed.

jackburton: No problem about the software. A fair amount of software
that I've bought over the years didn't work out. It's part of the
game. The fact that the software didn't do the job gave me the
incentive to dig in & try to fix the problem myself.....and I guess I
was lucky that the first thing I tried.....going into the registry and
hunting down and deleting ALL keys named "microsoft word" fixed the
problem.
