It's my understanding that when creating a domain name, it's
understood that all of the letters are lower-case

However, if a user looking to load the site into their browser types
the domain name using some upper-case letters, their browser will
probably still bring up the site, and that this is a function of the
browser.

Just wondering if my understanding is correct.

Thanks.

Hello Skip 9801 ~

Domain names are NOT case sensitive.

So www.yourdomain.com
or wWw.YoUrDoMaIn.cOm
or WWW.YOURDOMAIN.COM

will all resolve to the same domain.

It's not really a case of the browser "translating" requests to the
proper case as it is the fact that domain names are not case
sensitive.

Here are a few links from domain registrars about domain registration
and case sensitivity:

So, if I want to create a domain name for a store (for purposes of
example only) called My Little Store, and want to advertise it as
www.MyLittleStore.com, should I create a domain name where all the
letters are in lower case, or should I create a domain name where the
"M" and the "L" and the "S" are in upper case?

Thanks.

Hi Skip ~

When you go to register your domain, you can enter it in lower case if
you want, or upper, or any combination you would like, as it doesn't
make any difference.

For consistency, register it in lower case, then you can alway
advertise it in upper and lower case if you want.

Hope this helps,
Serenata

Yeah - basically everything left of the slash is case-insensitive.
Everything to the right of the slash is case-sensitive.

These rules were set by RFC's written by computer working groups in
the 1980's. If webbrowser, server, or random piece of software
demands that domain names be case-sensitive, then it's being "non-RFC
compliant". Sometimes it happens.

Thanks - that answers my question.

I should register it in all lower-case, but I can advertise it in any
mixture of lower and upper case.
