Hello janice74-ga, I'd say he'd be a North Yorkshireman today, based on where he was born and spent his childhood. He was born at Marton in 1728, and moved to Great Ayton in 1736. "Home Page" [under "Captain Cook's Life"] Captain Cook Society http://www.captaincooksociety.com/ccsu1.htm Both Marton and Great Ayton (and for that matter Staithes and Whitby, where he later lived) are located in modern North Yorkshire. "Census Information - Place selected: Marton (Middlesbrough)" North Yorkshire County Council http://www.northyorks.gov.uk/libraries/census/detail.asp?frmCplist=M&Parish_ID=1153 "Census Information - Place selected: Great Ayton" North Yorkshire County Council http://www.northyorks.gov.uk/libraries/census/detail.asp?frmPlace=ayton&Parish_ID=699 - justaskscott-ga I searched for the following terms, individually or in combination, on Google or the North Yorkshire County Council Census Database: "captain cook" marton middlesbrough "great ayton" staithes whitby |
