In Pleasanton, CA (San Francisco Bay Area) there used to be a little shop that specialized in delicious chocolate made from, of all things, cheese. The shop closed (last I can remember it would have been around 1991 or 1992)and since then I have never been able to find another place that sold or made such a confection. The place was called Joanna's or Joanne's Cheese something... Can any one tell me of a place that sells this, online or off (prefer around the Bay Area). I know it sounds weird, but the taste was really out of this world, very strong chocolate with just a smidgen of cheese flavoring, mmmm... Thanks! |

Hi, bluesky! Many decades ago, I remember ordering some wonderful neufchatel cheese chocolates from a catalog of Wisconsin food products. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of the catalog. I haven't located enough useful material to post an answer, but I hope some of the things I've found may be useful. Here's an article about a French chocolatier who uses cheese in his candies: http://search.csmonitor.com/durable/1998/01/26/intl/intl.1.html A recipe for making your own cheese-filled chocolates: http://www.globalgourmet.com/food/special/2002/newchocolate/mcgee.html From the Goat Lady Dairy website: "CHOCOLATE GOAT CHEESE TRUFFLES Ordinarily chocolate truffles are made with eggs or cream or butter. Instead of these we only use our fresh Fromage (so lower in fat and cholesterol) blended with semi-sweet chocolate and coated in Dutch cocoa to make an extra-ordinary delight tasting somewhere between fudge and cheesecake. ...To order Goat Lady Farmstead Cheese please phone or e-mail us for availability and prices. 336-824-2163 goatladydairy@mindspring.com" http://www.goatladydairy.com/Products.htm Oakdale Cheese & Specialties offers chocolate cheese truffles, but apparently they don't sell online: http://spendtheday.org/article.php?sid=13 Here's a cute "cheese chocolate": http://store.yahoo.com/gdcom/storcheescho1.html Best, Pink |

Hey- Growing up in Michigan, I often went on family vacations in the northern part of the state. In touristy places, especially, like Traverse City and Mackinac Island, a chocolate-cheese is sometimes sold in the ubiquitous fudge shops that trap MI vacationers. I couldn't find a link to any mail-order companies from N. Michigan, but I found this link to a place in Frankenmouth, MI....another tourist destination (in SE Michigan) that celebrates early settlers' German heritage. They sell plain chocolate cheese by the pound, and also flavored chocolate cheeses. From what I remember, chocolate cheese tastes a lot like fudge, but with a slightly sour, cheesy taste. I'm not a big fan, actually. http://www.frankenmuthcheesehaus.com/fch/home.nsf/public/chocolate_flavored_cheeses.htm Also, the dairy club at MSU claims to have invented chocolate cheese. I think you can order it from them as well. They have pictures of the chocolate cheese-making process as well on this website: http://www.msu.edu/user/dairysto/CHEESE.htm Hope that helps. |

Hi bluesky-ga, It looks like someone else is nostalgic for the chocolate cheese candies from a shop in the Cheese Factory Building in Pleasanton. http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/4925c/b852c/4/?o=2 This is the Cheese Factory Building... in name only now. Built in the early 60's, this place used to actually make cheese on the premise for many many years. My mother would stroll me down Main Street and a loud whistle would blow and out would come all this steam, like a blinding fog and the strong smell of Swiss Cheese. I thoght it was the giant cheese monster and nearly had to be hospitalized for my nerves everytime we passed by the place. Needless to say I don't eat Swiss Cheese. But... it later dropped the cheese production and just sold the cheese, along with fine local wines, crackers, lunch meats, and sold the most AWESOME chocolate cheese candies... yes they were actually very very good. Now, sadly, this place is the Pleasanton Cheese Factory in name only. It now actually houses a bar and several eateries. |

Hi bluesky, I too lived in Michigan, and remember exactly the choclolate cheese to which you refer. (At least I believe I do.) About 20 years ago, on 27, going from Lansing to St. John's, on the west side, was a small restaurant/gift shop. I believe the name was Herbrucks, and it had a mouse on the roof. They sold authentic chocolate cheese. Firm, almost like cheddar, but dark, and chocolatey, with just a smack of sour taste, like henny88 describes. The cheese I used to buy had nuts in it as well. This restaurnat also had a sign telling how MSU developed this cheese. I never found the identical cheese anywhere else in the world. I found a reference to Herbruck Farms in Michigan, but no way to reach them. Now that you have me hankerin' for some, I'll continue to look! crabcakes-ga |
