Czh, I would like you to do $50 worth of internet trawling for market
research reports on Vitamins (especially paediatric) in the UK and
Europe. I have already found the Mintel, Datamonitor and Euromonitor
reports but would like to know what other reports (paid for and free)
are out there.

What I really want to understand is, are the major players different
in different European countries and why. I don't expect you do do the
analysis, I just want you to pull the raw data.

If you manage to find any reports explaining how the market for
paediatric vitamins is different from adult vitamins, so much the
better (note British spelling of paediatric).

A bit of feedback on Zantac: One of the most useful documents on
Zantac you managed to find was an appendix to an academic report
(LingDTCCharts21.xls). I certainly wouldn't have been able to find
that by myself, so that was of great value to me.

I'm putting most of the payment as a bonus (base $10 bonus $40) and
I'm hoping you'll be done by Monday morning my time.

Hello Victor,

Nice to see you again. I'll get on this today and should definitely
have your answer by Monday.

Hello Victor,

This was another challenging research project. There is lots of market
information available for the OTC pharmaceuticals industry in general
and the category of vitamins, minerals and nutritionals in particular.
Unfortunately, most of the hard information is in expensive reports. I
didn’t bother with Mintel, Datamonitor and Euromonitor since you said
you had these covered. I was able to find several other sources. These
might be redundant but I hope there will be some reports that are new
to you. Some of them have extensive table of contents that include the
key players. I think these will help you evaluate whether the major
players are different in the countries that you’re interested in.

The most significant item I found that will definitely impact the
European vitamin market is the recent approval of the European
Directive for Food Supplements. The EU Parliament approved this
directive in 2002 and all member states are supposed to publish their
own corresponding directives within a year. This means that
implementation of this directive is starting this year. The most
relevant issue regarding vitamins is the requirement that high dose
vitamins will be available only by prescription. Since the EU
countries all have various approaches to food supplements, this
directive will affect the marketing of vitamins in all member
countries.

My search located some children’s vitamin resources. Most of what I’ve
found discusses general issues. The sales information is most likely
to be found in the general market research reports for vitamins,
minerals and supplements.

I hope this research will meet your needs.

All the best.

~ czh ~

PS: I can’t restrain my curiosity any longer. You’re researching an
eclectic range of products. I think you’re an ophthalmologist. How do
all these projects fit together? Just wondering. :-))

Key European And Asian Consumer Data Unveiled

What motivates Asian and European consumers? US research company
HealthFocus International has just completed the most comprehensive

Here, Lyn Ciocca analyses the data from select markets with exclusive
excerpts from the groundbreaking 30-nation study

Europe
Although Europe is often regarded as a unified entity, it is in fact
made up of many unique markets, each with their own idiosyncrasies. In
Europe, one size definitely does not fit all despite a push to
harmonise regulations throughout the continent for supplements,
botanicals and functional food ingredients. Consumer habits and
patterns vary — sometimes significantly — between nations.
Scandinavians shop differently from southern Europeans, who differ
from other nations such as Germany and the Netherlands. Knowing the
differences in consumer behaviour, then, can give companies the
critical edge to launch new products successfully.

particular vitamins.

Vitamins and Supplements - Executive Summary
The market for vitamins and supplements fell dramatically between 2000
and 2001, to reach a value that is only slightly higher than the value
recorded for the market in 1998. Decline is evident across six of the
seven sectors identified in this report, with only multivitamins
bucking the trend with a growth rate that barely keeps pace with
inflation.

Concerns over efficacy and conflicting results of medical research are
prompting consumers to become increasingly sceptical of the benefits
offered by taking minerals, vitamins and other supplements.

The market now faces a stern test. In March 2002, the EU introduced
new legislation that aims to harmonise European law with regard to the
availability of many of the products covered by this report. Such
action places great doubt over the stability of the market for many
mainstream and periphery products and will surely result in a further
reduction in the overall size of the UK and European market over the
coming 10 years.

Sales slump as Britons lose faith in vitamin pills
(Filed: 25/11/2001)

A survey by the Pharmaceutical Association of Great Britain found that
the sum of money spent on vitamin and mineral supplements in Britain
jumped substantially between 1998 and 1999, from £292.2 million to
£310.1 million a year, an increase of just over six per cent.

That was sharply reversed in 2000, when purchases through chemists'
and grocers' shops fell 1.5 per cent to £305.3 million. The drop in
sales was almost entirely accounted for by a 9.4 per cent fall in the
sum spent on tablets containing single vitamins. Sales of
multivitamins and minerals were also down.

The fall is another blow to the vitamin industry, which was fined a
record £543 million by the European Commission last week for operating
a price-fixing cartel in Britain and Europe.

Summary
The United Kingdom (UK) nutritional supplements market was valued
at $420 million (m) in 1994. The market has grown steadily over
the last few years, showing significant growth of about 15
percent in 1994. It is expected to continue growing at a rapid
rate over the next several years, although different segments
will grow at different rates.

supplements which include vitamins. It might be worth a look because
it gives a comprehensive overview of the industry.

Europe Threatening To Ban Dietary Supplements -- International
Assistance Needed To Stop Draconian EU Vitamin Laws

Currently under consideration in Europe is legislation that will
severely limit a consumer's right to choose and use supplements. If
this legislation becomes law it will be a major step towards the
adoption of global standards for the regulation of dietary
supplements, as is being worked on at the UN's Codex Alimentarius
Commission. Since the U.S. is part of this process and is a member of
the World Trade Organization, the U.S. could be forced to harmonize
its vitamin laws with these new, highly restrictive international
standards.

EU Food Supplements Directive Updates!

LONDON 1 July 2003 - The House of Lords, in a vote of 132 to 79,
approved a motion last night asking the Government not to transform
the European Food Supplements Directive into UK law. While the
motion, put forward by Earl Howe, is not binding, it sends a strong
message to the Government to return to the negotiating table with the
European Commission and Council to work out a solution that will allow
UK consumers continued access to health supplements.

EU Food Supplement Legislation	by Paul NicholsonOn 13th March, the
European Parliament approved the "common position" on the European
Commission's Directive on food supplements - effectively the "second
reading" before becoming European law.

This EC Directive has been rattling round the European corridors of
power for a couple of years now. It proposes a common legal framework
for food supplements which would apply to all EU members. As we
currently have fairly loose regulation on food supplements, the
greatest impact will be felt here in the UK.

Hands Off Vitamins and Herbs

Visits to Complementary Alternative Medicine practitioners throughout
Europe outnumber those to doctors by two to one. Government figures
show UK citizens spend £70 million per year on nutritional supplements
and about 20% of the population use vitamins and minerals in their
diets. But European Parliament Directives passed in March 2002 will
ban food supplements, in a bid to re-classify them as medical drugs.
Sam Burcher reports.

Criticism is mounting for what is seen as an "over the top" move by
pharmaceutical companies to take firmer control of the lucrative
health promotion and disease prevention markets. …. Fears that
high-strength multivitamins and minerals will only be available on
prescription are not unfounded. … Present regulations governing
high-dose vitamins for long-term use are governed in the UK by the
Department of Health and advised by Council for Responsible Nutrition
(CRN) and the Expert Panel on Vitamins and Minerals. … A total of 300
"over the counter pills" are likely to be axed by the EU Science
Commission for Foods, a body of scientists unaccountable to any
government or parliament. They have already greatly limited the amount
of vitamins and minerals available and will be seeking to set the
absolute minimum Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA)

ILSI Europe : Vitamins and minerals: A model for safe addition to
foods -- 2003
The ILSI Europe Addition of Nutrients to Foods Task Force initiated a
project to develop a model to estimate the level of each micronutrient
that can be added safely to foods. The resulting article ‘Vitamins and
minerals: A model for safe addition to foods’ written by Prof. A.
Flynn et al. has now been published in the European Journal of
Nutrition 42:118-130 (2003).

Significant subgroups in most European populations have intakes below
nationally recommended levels for several vitamins, minerals and trace
elements, placing individuals at risk of suboptimal intake of
important vitamins and minerals. The voluntary addition of
micronutrients to the appropriate foods may help addressing the risks
associated with low micronutrient intakes. However, concerns need to
be addressed regarding the potential for unacceptably high intakes,
particularly for those people consuming very large amounts of food.

fortifying foods to guarantee the necessary vitamin intake for the
general population in Europe.

Growing And Healthy: Children's Supplements

Children's supplements are a hot category, garnering $510 million a
year as of July 2002, according to Nutrition Business Journal. And
consensus from practitioners and formulators said there's a greater
current need for children's supplements than ever before, particularly
vitamins and minerals.

"You can't just make a 'half-sized' adult product," said Rafael Avila,
manager of research and development at Nature's Plus in Melville, NY.
"You need to take into account the appropriate ingredient levels as
indicated by the USDA [U.S. Department of Agriculture] and FDA."

"The dosages are divided by the FDA in RDA values for children under
or over four years," said Schaffer. "And liquids are recommended for
children under 2 years old."

As far as form is concerned, liquids are the standard for children
under 2, but by no means exclusive to that age group. Some companies,
such as ChildLife, offer liquid supplements for a broad age range that
can be mixed with juice for a tasty, nutritious concoction. A few
manufacturers have experimented with effervescents, and some are
considering other mainstream delivery methods such as chewing gum, but
the most popular forms for kids are the gummy chews, chewable tablets
and similar products.

with making vitamins and supplements attractive to children. Although
the article is aimed at the American market, the topic is applicable

INTRODUCTION

Providing effective drug therapy for neonates, infants, children and
adolescents remains a challenge for all those working in the field of
paediatric medicine. Although many marketed drugs are used for
children, only a small percentage are licensed for the age group or
specific indications for which they are used. In addition, many
product presentations are intended for adults and are unsuitable for
children. A lack of information and the paucity of evaluated drug data
has in the past led to clinical disasters such as the grey baby
syndrome with chloramphenicol and phocomelia with thalidomide and to
the well publicised liver problems with aspirin and sodium valproate.
There are marked differences in the pharmacokinetic and
pharmacodynamic responses to drugs in the neonatal and paediatric
population when compared with adults. These include differences in
bioavailability, drug distribution, drug metabolism and excretion,
efficacy and adverse effects.

To answer you question, while I am indeed an ophthalmologist, I am now
much more interested in business (the repetitiveness of the work I did
as an ophthalmologist bored me--learning how do remove a cataract was
fun, but after doing several hundred, it was no longer fun at all). I
still do it, but part-time.

I am now partially self-employed as a health care consultant, my
clients asking my advice on a variety of health topics. Usually the
answer is obvious to me, but often I need to have research to back up
what I'm saying. I am not as skilled at you at trawling the Net.
Hence this work. Hope this satisfies your curiosity! Perhaps you
could let me know your background? I am curious but unlikely to stop
asking you to do research, since the quality of your work speaks for
itself.
