I'm running Windows XP on a Gateway computer. My CD Drive will read
CD's (data and audio), but I can't copy files to blank CD's. (I've
tried different brands of CD's)

About 2 months ago I couldn't get Roxio CD Creator to work, I
uninstalled it and downloaded the newest version from the web. That
didn't work so I uninstalled it (and got a refund). Then I downloaded
a CD copying program called Alcohol 120% - under trial - it WORKED, I
could write CD's. Then I upgrated to Win Media Player 9. After that I
could not make CD's but I did not associate the Media Player with the
problem so I uninstalled Alcohol 120%. I still have the problem so I
think it has something to do with Win Media Player 9, (I saw questions
on the Microsoft discussion board about this type of issue, but no
answers)

Any ideas?

Mark

Hi Mark,

Can you please tell us your drive's model and if it uses a specific CD
burning software?

Aside from Roxio CD Creator and Alcohol 120%, have you tried Nero?

Ahead Software - Nero

I think that you must uninstall WMP and then try with other software
like Nero or Burn4Free. If you want I can give you further assistance
on this.

Hi Mark,

Based on the specs that you gave, your drive is an LG Electronics
CD-RW drive model GCE-8160B. From what I've seen in several forums
regarding your drive, your problem is usually caused by incompatible
driver for Windows OS, depending on the driver one is using. In you're
case, it's likely an incompatibility issue with WinXP. Since we are
still troubleshooting, you can try upgrading the drive's device
driver. Just make sure to read the Readme file carefully for the
installation to avoid making a mistake. You can download the driver
here:

LG Electronics Alabama Inc.

Your drive's manual can be downloaded here:

Since you had a hard time using Roxio and you now also have a problem
with Alcohol 120%, you can try the easy to use Nero Burner. You can
download their fully functional demo version here:

Ahead Software
Nero 6 Ultra Edition demoversion

If it works and you like it, then you can buy the software.

If this solves your problem, please tell me so I can post an answer.

Hi. I tried the Nero software as suggested and it works great. I like
it and will be buying it.

One issue - when I make CD's from Win Media Player it usually works,
but sometimes it says something is wrong (I don't know the message)
and it disables the Nero plug-in. I just re-enable it and it works.
This has happened a few times. I don't see it as a big deal, but
before you close this out can you comment on this? Then go ahead and
close it out. I don't make that many CD's where this will be a reall
issue, but if you have any thoughts I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for the Nero suggestion. I really like the software - very user
friendly.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your interest in my suggestion. I'm happy that you liked
it. Please forgive me for the late response as I was so busy with
another project.

As you may already know, there can be many possible causes for a
certain problem when it comes to computer systems. Your problem could
be the drive, the driver, Media Player, software conflict with Nero
and/or Media Player or a combination of both hardware and software
problems. It could also be because the Nero software you tried to use
is still demoversion. Since none of the tech researchers here can be
there to personally handle your system and look at the problem,
troubleshooting this one can be lengthy.

Since the problem is not really a big issue for you, try changing some
settings of Media Player. Go to Tools> Options> Copy Music tab:
Uncheck "Copy CD when inserted" and "Eject CD when copying is
completed" then go to Devices tab and configure your CDR drive. Also,
it would be great if you carefully read the documentation of Nero
because there could be a specific software setting to avoid this type
of problem.

Also please don't forget to upgrade the driver for your device if
applicable. Again, please make sure to read the Readme file carefully
for the installation to avoid making a mistake. Download the driver
here:

When you say that you can't copy files to blank cds, could you give
more details? I assume when you say that you tried different brands,
that you recieved some sort of error during the "burn" that said there
was a failure?

One of the easiest ways to track issues like this is by the exact
error message you recieved....

Depending on when you got you pc and for how much it could be that you
dont have a CD burnner. Now a days all 1k PC's have a burnning drive
(unless you got a really bad deal), i see no other reason why you cant
burn CD's.
