Getting dental work done at a education facility

I heard that you could get reasonable quality dental work done for a
fraction of the normal price by going to a dental school like UCLA
School of Dentistry or Loma Linda.

Here are some of the things I was wondering about.

I need 4 teeth extracted. Am I a good candidate for an educational
institute?
Will I really pay 1/4th to half the normal rate?
Which schools have dental facilities and accept such patients and are
in the Southern Calf area (LA, San Diego, Irvine) or San Francisco
area?
Were do I go to apply (email or phone)?
Is there a long wait?
What can I do to up my chances for getting accepted and accepted
without having to wait to long?

Can you answer some of these questions or provide me with leads?

thanks in advance,

There are five dental schools in California: University of California,
San Francisco and Los Angeles; The University of Southern California;
Loma Linda University; and University of the Pacific. There are dental
clinics in each school where student dentists supervised by faculty
dentists offer a variety of general and specialty dental treatments. A
faculty dentist will screen when you visit the first time to determine
if the treatment you need will provide a good training experience for
one of the dental students. Dental work may cost 30 to 40% less.
Because dental care is provided in an educational setting, treatment
will take longer.

For each University Dental Center I will provide:

- Information and procedures on how to become a patient
- Contact information
- Costs when available

The UCLA Dental Center
======================

The UCLA Dental Center offers a variety of general and specialty
clinics for patients of all ages.

“The UCLA Dental Center can provide all of your dental care from
simple cleanings to the most complex surgery. This care is provided as
part of the school's educational program. Since most of the care is
provided by student dentists supervised by faculty dentists, care
progresses more slowly than in a private practice. To compensate for
this inconvenience, our fees are often much lower than those charged
by private dentists.”

(..)

“During your first visit, a faculty dentist in New Patient Services
(310-206-3904) will screen you to determine if the treatment you need
will provide a good training experience for one of our dental
students.”

“Each clinic visit takes approximately three hours because our
students work carefully under the close supervision of our faculty.”

“If you are accepted for treatment, X-rays will be taken, and your
medical and dental history will be reviewed. Your head, neck, teeth
and the soft tissues in your mouth will be examined as well. The fees
for the examination and X-rays must be paid before the X-rays are
taken. A student dentist will contact you within a few days to
complete your examination and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.”

“The USC School of Dentistry (USCSD) is a “learning organization”
dedicated to improving the health of all people. (..) General
dentistry procedures are provided by student dentists and dental
hygienists under the supervision of experienced faculty.”

BECOMING A PATIENT:

“Individuals seeking care are directed to our first floor patient
admitting clinic where they are examined by a dentist. No appointments
are made in this department. Patients are seen on a first come,
first-served basis. After this brief examination by a dentist,
patients are assigned to a Group Practice. The fee range is $80-$130
which includes x-rays, an oral examination and a treatment plan. These
procedures will be performed over the first 3 visits.”

“Because dental care is provided in an educational setting, treatment
will take longer. Patients are asked to be available one morning,
afternoon or evening each week, so that care can progress at a
mutually acceptable rate. Each appointment is 3 to 3.5 hours.”

(..)

“For those interested in shorter appointments (but at a higher cost),
we recommend dental care provided in our Faculty Practice.

Cost:

“The USC Group Practice system keeps its fees as low as possible,
despite the high cost of providing dental care.”

“Denti-Cal and Delta Dental are accepted for covered services. Our
insurance office processes insurance claim forms for direct
reimbursement for covered services under many insurance plans, contact
them with further questions (213) 740-1505.”

“As a health professional school, our major public service is in the
area of patient care. We provide a comprehensive approach to the
delivery of dental services, allowing us to meet the diverse needs of
our patient population. (..) Our services range from the routine to
the most sophisticated in oral health care today.”

New Patients:

“Please call (415) 476-1891. You will be informed of the various
clinics and services available. Customer services staff will help make
an appointment for a new patient visit and will inform you of what you
need to bring to your first appointment.”

Student Clinics take longer and cost less:

“In student clinics, faculty members supervise and evaluate each step
of the care provided. Because of this, services will generally take
twice as long than they would in a private dental office. This
attention to detail requires more of your time. Depending on the
complexity of the procedure required, most appointments will last 2-3
hours.”

“Fees for services provided by student providers are roughly half the
cost you would pay in a private dental office. All fees will be
explained to you in detail before your treatment begins.”

Faculty Clinics are faster however they cost the same as a private
dental practice.

“In faculty clinics, the time required for procedures is the same as
what you would find in a private dental office.”

“Fees in faculty practices are comparable to those of a private dental
office in the San Francisco area.”
