Howdy Ingrid,
Keep in mind that Google Answers is not associated with the Google
search facilities, so Google Answer Researchers, such as myself,
have no specific "inside" information on how the Google search
engine works, etc. That said ...
The computer age, and the internet age, is a wondrous thing. The
obscure is not so obscure anymore.
The third page of a Google search on: Treece, KS contains a clue
to why there are 7,000 plus hits on those search terms.
There appears Hexa Software Development Center's ZIPCodeWorld website.
http://www.postalcodeworld.com/lookup.asp?zipcode=66778
"ZIP_CODE 66778
CITY TREECE
STATE KS
AREA_CODE 316
...
INCOME_PER_HOUSEHOLD 22500
AVERAGE_HOUSE_VALUE 9999"
They produce the ZIPCodeWorld United States Gold Edition.
http://www.postalcodeworld.com/zipcodegold.htm
"Product Summary: ZIPCodeWorld United States Gold Edition - The
database includes ZIP code, city name, alias city name, state code,
phone area code, city type, county name, country FIPS, time zone, day
light saving flag, latitude, longitude, county elevation, MSA, PMSA,
CBSA and Census 2000 data in United States. The complete database
contains over 76,000 precise records."
What most of the sites that show up from your search have in common
is they are of the search, locater, lists, etc. types of pages, such
as this Electronic Appraiser web page.
http://www.electronicappraiser.com/sitemap/state/KS/countyno/021
"Kansas
...
Allen County, Kansas
...
Cherokee County, Kansas
...
Badger
...
Treece"
Sites like these have just dumped a whole zip code, or similar,
database into their website database program, mainly so people
can do a lookup for services nearby to them. It's not quite
that simple, but the end result is the same. These very same
websites are the ones showing up on your Treece, KS search.
Some produce actual pages that list Treece, KS like above. There
are sites like Verizon's SuperPages wherein the word Treece does
not appear on the actual page, but rather in the title bar and
keyword list, both sort of "behind the scenes" methods.

The database is there though, as on this SuperPages web page.

There is some "smoke and mirrors" going on, as lots of the 7000 plus
hits are multiple pages from the same websites. After "only" around
660 hits, you get the following notice from Google.
"In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some
entries very similar to the 660 already displayed ..."
Without any filtering, such as placing Treece, KS in quotes, you also
are getting some false positives on your search, such as the following
Foor Family Genealogy web page, where you get the family name of Treece
showing up on a page with KS.
http://www.foorgenealogy.com/d0005/g0000055.html
"The Henshaw, Riggenbach, Thomson, Treece, and Tuin Families
[much later on the same page]
DEATH: AFT 1 Jun 1900, of Hampton Twp.,Rush Co.,KS"
The word Treece by itself is prevalent on the internet, and produces
over 30,000 hits when searched on Google with: Treece -KS -Kansas
://www.google.com/search?q=Treece+-KS+-Kansas
To start cutting through some of the excess, you have to do a more
targeted search, such as putting Treece, KS in quotes for the search,
as in: "Treece, KS"
This produces close to 400 hits, with it getting into duplicate hits
after 140 or so. Still, the same kind of "list" hits.
Lest you think that everything that mentions Treece, KS, is all "fluff"
and not what your were looking for, here is a United States Department
of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
{CDC} web page titled "Metal/Nonmetal Mine Disasters."

"01/31/1939 Southern Treece, KS 5 [Killed] Zinc [Product] Roof fall"
