For google answerers:

I’m looking for help in handling files and directories on my PC
(running system 2000 professional).

The utility I’m hoping to find would have a lot of features, but of
course I’d like to hear of any that include even parts of the wish
list. Here’s what I’d like, in order of importance:

COLOR-CODING in directory lists. It’s quite stunning that Microsoft
hasn't made this available. (And not just for icons, which is Apple’s
half-hearted solution, but for file names (and/or for the field
background, if that’s feasible within directories; this would actually
be preferable, since it would be more visible than simply having the
indivdiual charcters in color.)

FILE-HANDLING help. I’m looking for something that might offer what
Outlook offers. Without going into detail, Outlook lets you select a
file or several, and THEN choose where to move or copy what you’ve
selected, in a little window that opens up and lets you scroll to your
target directory. Better yet, when you next use this function, it
remembers the last target directory and presents that one as
pre-selected. Apparently the user-friendlness-department at Microsoft
hasn’t noticed that what’s available in Outlook is needed in the
operating system generally. They should do more inter-cubicle
visiting.

COLUMN layout. It would be nice if I didn’t have to re-set this all
the time for the literally thousands of directories I have. Yes, I
know that the PC’s folder window offers settings that pretend to let
you set options, but the most basic option of all – choosing which
columns of data to display, and in which order – is apparently not
available.

	Specifically, there are:
	1. TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS. But no way to do what I’ve asked. Yes, it
pretends to let you “ make all folders look like the current one,” yet
column settings do not become universal -- in fact, they’re apparently
not recalled even for SAME folder, after you close & re-open it.
(Well, sometimes they are--nothing here seems consistent...)
	2. VIEW > CUSTOMIZE THIS FOLDER. Here, too, no help with these
essentials.

DIRECTORY WINDOWS: It’s fairly common (!) to have several directory
windows open. It would be nice to have the choice of selecting TWO (or
more!) that will stay open in a helpful screen-filling tiled mode, at
least until your session is over. (To also let you store & recall such
selections would require super-human brilliance, I suspect.) And if
they could optionally scroll or not scroll in tandem, this would be
logical too.

I doubt that I’m the only person on earth who needs these things. Do
they exist?

Thanks!

P.S. There are many very smart people answering questions here who
seem to understand my queries, every time. Isn't it weird that
Microsoft doesn't address so many questions like those above? They
should hire through this Google list, I guess, and get some of this
stuff fixed. They can pay more than I can...
