I know a broken ankle is probably the most common broken bone, but how
common is a compound ankle fracture?

Are you interested in how common are compound ankle fractures overall
- or for a specific population or for certain causes (e.g. associated
with a disease, athletics or sports or other activities?)

actually, I was interested in population of the military, US Navy and
Marines, I had one while in the Navy in Turkey, from an old house
collapsing on me, I am researching to help my case for back
injury,(compressed discs) that happened 35 years ago, and now the
nerves are getting pinched. I just dont think it is an easy injury to
sustain,(compound ankle fracture)and that it was tons of rubble
falling on me that caused it. I have not been able to find even one
other one. but I would be interested in any cases or stats.

Clarification of Question by theo44-ga on 14 Oct 2003 09:26 PDT
Has there been any compound ankle fractures in the last 3 years? what
was the cause? what about in the military?

Theo,

I could find no statistics to show how often compound ankle fractures
occur. I did find statistical injury sites, but they don't
differentiate between ankle fractures and compound ankle fractures.

However, here are some recent cases of compound fractures and how
they occured. I have also thrown in some accounts from WWII. (These
stories are extremely interesting to read in full) I am sure there are
plenty of military cases around the world, but I could find no
published reports of comprehensive statistics.

I hope these are of some use! They should help to answer your
question as stated in your last clarification:

"Has there been any compound ankle fractures in the last 3 years? what
was the cause? what about in the military?
