I am using Microsoft Word 2002 and Windows XP. I wrote a letter
yesterday and saved it to my default directory. I tried to open the
file today to edit it but I get the message "The file xxx.doc is not
available."
What causes this? The file is on the drive. I can open it with wordpad
and edit it. I looked at the properties for the directory and the
read-only checkbox is checked. I unchecked this box, and hit <apply>
and chose to apply the change to the folder, subforlders and files.
However, when I check the properties of the folder again, the read
only checkbox is still checked.
What is going on? I am logged in to windows as an administrator. |

Hello, aenea:
It is possible you place the document somewhere on the net so we can test it?
Regards.

Sure. I can post it to a newsgroup or email it to you. It is just a
simple .doc file. If you tell me which alt.binaries group to post to I
will have it up in no time at all.
Thanks.

Hello, aenea:
You can go here:
http://www.xpde.com/upload.php
And upload it there, so I can have access to it. On the other hand,
you can upload it to a binaries newsgroup if you want other
researchers have access to it. It's against Researcher Guidelines to
contact with you privately, so you cannot email it to me.
Regards.

I have uploaded a file called letter to avni teacher.doc to the site
you gave me.
One other thing. I copied the file to another PC on my network. I have
a copy of Word on that PC too, and tried to open the file on that PC.
It works there perfectly. So it seems that it is an issue on my PC and
not with the files themselves.

Hello, aenea:
When you get this message "The file xxx.doc is not available.",
xxx.doc it's the file you are trying to open? Also, in which directory
do you have the .doc file on your computer?
Regards

Yes, I get the message "The file xxx.doc is not available". This
happens whether I click on the file icon itself, and also when I try
to open the file from Word's File|Open command.
As I said earlier, when I copied the file to my other PC, it opened
just fine.
The file is is a directory called My Data, which is where I've kept
all my word and excel files.
This just started happening a couple of days ago. As a further test I
created a test file and saved it to my C: drive. It won't open with
word, I get the usual "The file test123.doc is not available message".
However the file opens fine in WordPad.
So it seems its not a problem with the files but a setting in Word
perhaps?

Have you tried to repair the installation of your Office 2002?
Unfortunately, this kind of problems are very usual in MS Office and
repair the installation solve most of them. Also, it would be nice,
after repair the setup, you update to the latest Office service pack.
