A while ago, I read an article about a man who when he was 17 or so made a list
of things he wanted to do before he died. By the time he died, he had done
something like 2/3 of them. I'd like to find both the original list, and which
ones he accomplished.

Hi there,

I believe the man you are referring to is Dr. John Goddard. At age 15 John
Goddard created a list of 127 challenging lifetime goals. He is famous for the
following quote, "To dare is to do, to fear is to fail."

John Goddard’s List of lifetime goals can be found on several sites including
WAMware.com
http://www.wamware.com/world-religions/life-list.htm
and 1Nomad.com
http://www.1nomad.com/admiration/goddard2.htm

On both sites, those items on the list that were achieved are marked off (with
an x or an *). You’ll note that the items checked off the two lists do not
match. It does not seem that one list is simply more current because the
unchecked items do not match. For example, #9 “Study Primitive Cultures in The
Congo” is checked off at WAMware.com but not at 1Nomad.com, while #37 “Carry
out careers in medicine and exploration” is checked off at 1Nomad.com and not
at WAMware.com.

I do not know when either of the pages was last updated, but it seems John
Goddard has accomplished approximately 109 out of his 127 goals, or roughly 86%.

Both the pages above also include biographical information on Dr. Goddard.

The list can be found in one of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books. It may be
found on some rock climbing or eagle scout web sites as though were included in
his goals.

Forbes Magazine published a list of 10 things to do before you die, inspired by
the dying words of Cecil Rhodes:

Chicken Soup for the Soul: 101 Stories to Open the Heart and Rekindle the
Spirit by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen wrote about John Goddard. At
15, he composed a list of 127 goals. As of the 1993 publication, he had
completed 108 of them. Included on the list still to achieve were to climb Mt.
Everest, visit the north and south poles, become a ham radio operator and read
the entire Encyclopedia Britannica. On the list of accomplishments are the
following: study native medicines and bring back useful ones, learn French,
Spanish and Arabic, retrace the travels of Marco Polo and Alexander the Great,
and study primitive cultures in Borneo.
