Hello.
I believe that I've located the article that you want. It is on the
web site of FoxNews.com and is dated November 5, 2001.
The quotation comes from Don Evans, one of Pres. Bush's closest
friends.
'..And Evans said the president sees fighting terrorism as the purpose
of his presidency and perhaps even a calling from God.
"He understands what his calling in life is. He understands that he's
been called at this moment," Evans said.'

I hope that this is the quotation that you had in mind. If it's not,
please use the "request clarification" feature to let me know, and I
will gladly resume my search. Thanks. |

Hello Juggler! Thx for answer. It's close... I think this is the
quote, and Don Evans is probably the guy that was interviewed. The
only problem is that I originally _read_ the quote, in a printed
interview. Since this is for a book I'm writing, I really could use a
_printed_ resource, i.e., something I can footnote that's more
authoritative than a website. Do you think we can find it? It may
have been in USA Today or Newsweek.
The quote I'm looking for did, indeed, say that Bush sees it as his
own personal calling... not just American's, but Bush's calling from
God. It was said by a "friend" of Bush's.
Thanks!!

I haven't been able to find a "print" version of that Don Evans quote.
However, I did find another quote that is in a print publication.
This particular quote is very similar, but the source this time is
Bush's senior adviser, Karl Rove.
From the Weekly Standard:
'Whether in a Christian or a more secular sense, Bush believes he's
been "called" to lead the country in the war against terrorism. He
feels it's not just by accident or luck that he's president now. This
feeling is reflected in the president's speeches, his comments to
reporters, and his conduct. Some who've met with Bush sense it in his
demeanor. Several religious leaders at the larger gathering on
September 20 referred to his calling. Bush and his aides have
discussed it. One White House official, in an off-the-record speech,
spoke of Bush's role now as his destiny. Bush himself has often said
he thinks "things happen for a reason." Karl Rove, his senior adviser,
says the need to defend America and eradicate terrorism following the
attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon "may be the reason he's
president, the purpose for which he's been put in office -- his
calling."'
