I will quickly answer your question from what i know
public (=managed by state) school system is very strong in France,
where equal chances to education and protection from external
influence(no reference to religion or politics) education are 2 strong
objectives given to education. You may have heard the mayhem in France
on the islamic veil, whether to allow it or not in school as it is
considered as a religious symbol and a constraint on women. It is a row
that sparkles each year endless fights and destabilises the
educational system as it is considered a threat to the "Republican
school".
that hesitate between republican orthodoxy (laicity, protection from
external influence) and tolerance. The education system is the first
employer in France.
The private schools (almost all christian school) represents the 15%.
Anyway, the teachers is both systems are appointed are paid by the
state (except religious education) which is a way to stabilise the
"market share" of both system)
Just keep in mind that education is an important issue in France and
has used many ministers as it seems impossible to manage (one
education minister said he will cut the fat off of the mammoth, which
raises hostility)
Both systems have a good reputation, even if the public system has the
more diversity (from the oldest schools viewed as elitist in the Latin
quarter to the understaffed schools in some underprivileged areas,
with difficulties)
Compared to others countries, the school is quite cheap (free
education is the principle)iin all public school system (you pay only
books in college and very low fee) even in universities (less than
1000 US dollars a year)
and private schools are also cheap as they receive money from the
state (from 1000 US a year from kids to 6 000 for a level)
COncerning the family, i would say that France is much more nuclear
than the others mediterranean countries (spain, italy) where it is
common for families to regroup around the grand parents (may be i
should say, used to as it is evolving very fast)
on the family evolution
(statistics, on "traditional"families, monoparental families,
recomposed families)
1,6 milllion children live in recomposed families
